Maddy writes: “Here is a mix that doesn’t have to be layered.
Chocolate Pudding Mix Recipe
- 2 1/2 cups instant nonfat dry milk
- 5 cups sugar
- 3 cups cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 1/2 cups unsweetened cocoa
- To Use: Make sure you wisk the mix in a bowl to get out any lumps before using.
- Measure out 2/3 cup of mix in a medium saucepan.
- Add 2 cups milk, one teaspoon vanilla, and one tablespoon butter.
- Cook over low heat stirring constantly until mixture comes to a boil.
- Continue cooking and stirring for one minute. Remove from heat and allow to cool.”
Heidi writes: “Here’s another one…
Ultimate Chippers Mix Recipe
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup milk chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup white chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup coarsely chopped pecans
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
>Layer ingredients attractively in any order into 1-quart food storage jar with tight-fitting lid. Pack ingredients down slightly before adding another layer.
>Cover top of jar with fabric: attach gift tag with raffia or ribbon. The gift tag should say:
- You’ll Need: 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
- 1 jar ultimate chippers mix
- 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit
- 2. Beat butter in large bowl until smooth. Beat in egg and vanilla until blended. (mixture may appear curdled.) Add cookie mix to butter mixture; stir until well blended.
- 3. Drop heaping teaspoonfuls dough 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 10-12 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Let cookies stand on cookie sheets for 2 minutes. Remove cookies to wire racks to cool completely. Makes 4 dozen cookies.”
Amelia writes: “Here one I use, hope this will be helpful. 🙂
Instant Cream of Soup Mix Recipe
- 2 cups instant milk
- 3/4 cups cornstarch
- 1/4 cups instant chicken bouillon (I suggest low sodium?)
- 1 tsp. onion powder
- 1/2 tsp. dried thyme
- 1/2 tsp. dried basil
- 1/4 tsp. pepper
- May be used for any recipe calling for a can of cream of mushroom, chicken or celery soup. Replace with 1/3 cup of mix and 1 1/4 cup water. Boil for a few minutes stirring often.
- I recently used the mixture without boiling just adding straight into a sauce recipe and let it simmer into the mixture already simmering. It worked and was a bit quicker plus saved a pot to wash.
- When giving as a gift I post the directions on the jar or bag. I keep the entire recipe glued on my jar I keep here at home for easy future reference.”
Where to Get Mason Jars Cheap:
So, are you wondering where to find mason jars? Frugal friend Danielle asked…
“Does anyone have suggestions for finding the jars on a good deal? Where do you have the best luck finding the jars? Thanks!?”
If you stock up throughout the year, you really can score some amazing deals on canning jars! Here are a few of my favorite sources…
- Amazon
- Classico Pasta Sauce, 24 oz. {wash out after dinner & reuse}
- Grocery Stores
- Joann
- Mom or Grandma’s Cupboards
- Target
- Thrift Stores
- Tractor Supply
- Walmart
- Yard Sales
Jackie writes: “I see them at Goodwill all the time.”
Judy writes: “I find all kinds of jars at Goodwill, Auctions sales and yard sales, I wash and clean them good and that way all I have to get are new rings and seals ”
Maddy writes: “Goodwill is a great place to find mason jars and other pretty jars for cheap. Especially on their half priced Saturdays! If you will not be canning with them, you just need to wash everything with hot, soapy water. If you are short on funds for jars, but have extra fabric sitting around, you can put some mixes in bags, then wrap in a circle of fabric and tie with ribbon.”

My mother-in-law LOVES to bake, and LOVES homemade gifts. And my father-in-law loves BBQing, smoking meats. (I am so blessed with in-laws who appreciate homemade gifts!) So many of these would be perfect for them, and I’m always looking for ways to show my appreciation for the ways they are always there for us.
That little jellybean and Peeps jar is too stinkin’ cute too! Perfect for Easter for the kids (though I might get plastic “jar” mugs from Dollar Tree for little ones.)
Thanks for these awesome ideas!
Heidi says
You’re very welcome, Melissa… I’m so glad you’re enjoying the easy gifts in a jar! That’s so sweet that your in-laws love receiving homemade gifts, too. They sound amazing!

This is one of my favorite sections of your blog, Heidi. It seems like there is something new each time I come back. Thanks!
Prachi Goswami says
Dear Heidi,
The ideas were great. Many teachers love cards. I had a great teacher’s day idea. We did it at school.
Most teacher love junk jewellery and handbags. Get them. For a smaller budget, by a geometry kinda plastic pouch which can be pulled out or anything of the kind. Put a small artificial rose, red pens, pencil and anything u like in it. The teachers r gonna love it. On the other hand, take a pink coloured handmade sheet, write a msg on it with black bold marker and outline it stylishly with white fluid or whitener pens. The message better be short on the first page. Inside paste a sheet on half side with the teacher’s and class’ pictures. On the side left write a msg or poem. I made one myself. At the back, write her name. You can also take cake and chocolates. Try it once!!!

Amish Friendship Bread
by unknown
Do not use any type of metal spoons or bowl for mixing. Do not refrigerate. If air gets into the bag, let it out.
It is normal for the batter to rise, bubble, and ferment.
Day 1: Do nothing. This is the date on which you receive the bag. Squish-squash-mush the bag.
Day 2: Squish-squash-mush the bag
Day 3: Squish-squash-mush the bag
Day 4: Squish-squash-mush the bag
Day 5: Squish-squash-mush the bag
Day 6: Add to the bag 1 C. flour, 1 C. sugar, 1 C. milk. Squish-squash-mush the bag.
Day 7: Squish-squash-mush the bag
Day 8: Squish-squash-mush the bag
Day 9: Squish-squash-mush the bag
Day 10: BAKING DAY! Mix and divide the starter as follows:
Pour entire contents of bag into large non-metal bowl and add: 1½ cup flour, 1½ cup sugar, 1½ cup milk.
Measure out 4 separate batches of the starter batter, 1 cup each, into 4 separate Ziplock bags (one gallon
size). Keep one for yourself and give the other 3 to friends along with a copy of this recipe/instructions.
Pre-heat oven to 325°. To the remaining batter in the bowl, add:
3 eggs
1 cup Canola oil
1 cup milk
1 cup sugar
2 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp vanilla
1½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
2 cups flour
1 large box instant vanilla pudding
Grease or butter 2 large loaf pans and mix an additional ½ cup sugar and 1½ tsp cinnamon. Dust the
greased pans with half the cinnamon/sugar mixture. Pour batter evenly into the pans and sprinkle the top
with remaining sugar mixture.
Bake for 1 hour. Cool until bread loosens from sides of pan and turn out to serving dish.
If bag isn’t passed on to a friend on the 10th day, be certain to tell recipient which day the bag is at when
given to them. If you keep a starter bag for yourself, you will be baking every 10 days.
PLEASE NOTE
If you give your starters all away, you will have to wait until someone gives you back a starter or you can
google how make your own starter. This is not my recipe – it is a copy of a recipe that was passed on
to me – and now passed on to you.
If you’d like to reprint this recipe, you can downloaded it at TheHappyZombie.com/pdf/amish.pdf
