I love your recipe, I’ve been making these for myself and my daughters… coworkers started asking me to make some for them to buy as Christmas gifts… first few batches I followed your recipe, at first I thought it might be a little too liquidy, but I noticed it solidified pretty quick in the jars just sitting at room temp (we keep our home on the cooler side). Next few batches I mistakenly only used 1/4 cup of oil and noticed a less liquidy consistency. But I’m not sure if that’s ok?

I just don’t like delivering to someone and its completely solid in this cool weather, but also don’t want it to not have enough of an oily feel to it when used… any advice on a happy medium?

        Hi Tiffany,

The level of liquidity in the original recipe is really related to the temperature in the room. It will begin to melt and become more liquid-y around 76 degrees and warmer. If it’s more solid, that’s just fine… it will melt as soon as it touches your skin. I’ve had the best success using the ratios in this recipe above. Hope that helps! 🙂

Thank you I was just concerned because some were so solid that I couldn’t even scoop them out with a spoon, I had to place The jar in the top of my dishwasher o steam setting to soften them lol

That makes sense with the cooler house temperature… sounds like you’re on the right track though, Tiffany! Have fun making your scrubs!! 🙂

Does this solidify at room temp or does it stay soft?

I love Mason jars and use them all over the house. But those canning jar lids are a nuisance (unless you’re canning) so I buy the white plastic storage lids that Bell makes. If your store sells them, they’ll be in the same display area as the jars. They come in both regular and wide mouth sizes.

I’m making this for Christmas gifts. Love all your stuff 🙂 Is the sugar just regular plain ol sugar and does the vanilla have to be oil or can it be vanilla extract? Thank you for all of your fabulous ideas!

Hi Amanda ~ yes… you’ll use just regular white sugar from your pantry. 🙂 I honestly haven’t tried with Vanilla Extract before, but the Vanilla Essential Oil works great… the scent is so yummy! Have fun making your gifts!!

What type/brand of essential vanilla oil do you recommend? Mainly using for the fragrance and wonder if there is a certain brand I should be looking for. Thanks!!!

Shouldn’t the melted coconut oil be allowed to cool down before adding the sugar? Otherwise the sugar will melt in the heat, unless that was the intention.

Coconut oil melts very quickly at a low temperature… I often use the oil alone on my hands and it literally melts just by being in your hand! No it does not melt the sugar due to its low melting point… when I make scrubs I watch the coconut oil in the micro wave and just let it go until all melted… it’s never as long as the directions say!

This stuff is amazing! It worked really well and my hands felt really smooth after this. I’m making some to give as a gift, and I added a little red food coloring and some peppermint extract instead of the vanilla essential oil, and it turned out great!
