The first thing you’ll want to do is stock up on Belly Bands… they’re such a game changer!
Rebecca writes: “To save money when I was recently pregnant, I shopped the sales for what I was going to need towards the end. I typically bought one size larger in the maternity clothes than I normally wear so they’d fit at the end. If you can, invest in some nice maxi dresses too, that was all I could wear comfortably towards the last couple weeks of being pregnant. Also, spend the money on good jeans, because some brands shrink and don’t last.”
Jacque writes: “I wore empire waist sundresses as tops all through my pregnancy. You can find them for much cheaper than maternity tops. I layered them with either short or long sleeved t-shirts underneath or wore a cardigan over them. Because they’re longer than a top, they hide whatever waistband you’ve got going on below.”
Jennifer writes: “I wore my maxi dresses!”
Laura writes: “I checked out clearance racks. If I planned ahead, I found clearance items I’d be ready to wear a few months down the road!”
Wendi writes: “I borrowed 90% of my maternity work wardrobe. I bought only 2 or 3 new pieces. I also bought a few pieces from a second-hand store and at a second-hand sale. Technically, I wore maternity clothes for only 5 months. I couldn’t justify spending a lot of money.”
Sandi writes: “Another trick is to buy tops labeled “tunic.” By definition, these tops are longer and will last you longer (and thus probably why I was able to wear my regular pants all through my pregnancy. If anyone saw what was going on underneath!!) 🙂 “
Sandi writes: “Look for knit pants that stretch.”
Jill writes: “I bought some “normal” clothes in just a bigger size. There are styles out there now that are more gathered at the top and bigger around the belly so they stretch without being “maternity.” That way after the baby is born you feel like you’re wearing “normal” clothes (especially if you are nursing). I found some good deals at Ross too. 🙂”
Jude writes: “Anything with an elastic waist was a winner!”
Kay writes: “Just buy floaty dresses and shirts & drawstring pants or shorts, then you can still wear them after you give birth. Those labeled for maternity cost more just because they are considered specialty clothing.”
Devon writes: “I bought larger sizes in my normal clothes, and thrifted. Actually, I didn’t wear maternity clothes for my first pregnancy… military overseas and we had little to no options.”
Lydia writes: “I just bought clothes the next size or two up and looked for empire waisted shirts and dresses or stretchy material.”
Nicole writes: “I bought deep discounted L and XL shirts for $3.00. I had low rise jeans and bought 2 discounted pairs that were 1 and 2 sizes bigger. A summer stretchy babydoll top without ties worked as a skirt. Also bought 2 babydoll crisscross dresses in L and XL that worked.”

(How to Dress Classy on a Budget)
Midori writes: “I wore all my own clothes for as long as possible then switched to dresses for the late stage of my pregnancies. I even still wore my own jeans.”
Christine writes: “Shoe laces worked really well in jeans!”
Rebecca writes: “I rubber banded the buttons on my button-fly jeans”
Easy Closet Organization Tips and Tricks
Saria writes: “Never be without a rubber band. This trusty little friend will save you in all kinds of situations (infamous button-popping being one), and you can use the age-old loop around the jeans button and through the hoop to keep your pants up and get more time out of your regular jeans than you would otherwise. Paired with the Belly Band and/or long tank, people won’t even know they’re being held up with a rubber band.”
Sara writes: “The thing that helped me the most was a belly band. It makes your regular pant size work a little longer into your pregnancy by being able to unbutton and unzip them. The belly band goes over them and holds them up. Also great for after you have the baby and are ready to be out of maternity pants but your regular pants don’t quite fit yet.”
Where to Buy Maternity Clothes for Work
Jennifer writes: “As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I went online to Target, Kohl’s, Motherhood Maternity, etc. and bought clearance items for that season (I found out in May, and all Winter clothes were super cheap). That way by the time they fit it would be that right season.”
Maura writes: “I’ve gotten 4 shirts for less than $2 at Target in the last 6 months. I combine their $3 off Maternity coupon with an item on their clearance racks.”
Amy writes: “Target has some great stuff, especially basics like tees and camis. I always thought the Liz Lange line ran a little small, so go when you have time to try stuff on.”
Genius Ways to Save Money at Target
June writes: “My sister and I sent our maternity clothes back and forth. Our babies were just far enough apart to share but we always added a new one to the box as we mailed it.”
Christie writes: “I have found a lot of great maternity clothes at kids Consignment Stores. Another way to make your regular pants last a little longer is to loop a rubber band through the button hole and then around the button. As long as your shirt is long enough, this works well in those “transitional” months where you’re really not big enough for real maternity clothes, but your regular clothes are just not comfy anymore.”
Christina writes: “Consignment and resale shops are probably the cheapest to buy maternity clothes at. Garage sales are also a good place to find maternity clothes and just borrowing from friends (providing your similar in sizes).”
Saria writes: “If you have one in your area, Burlington Coat Factory has nice quality, -modern- maternity clothes. I found great trendy jeans and khakis (for work) for $16-$25, which is MUCH cheaper than any other store selling new maternity clothes. The jeans especially were a huge plus, since maternity jeans are a) expensive and b) usually not very stylish unless you pay a lot of money; not so at Burlington, where they really did look like jeans anyone else would be wearing, pregnant or not.
At that price, it’s not a huge investment to buy a couple pairs. Shirts aren’t quite a problem, since you might not have to buy maternity shirts at all until the end, unless you need fitted/button-down styles. Current styles work pretty well with pregnant bellies and layering tanks are usually long and stretchy, and rarely more than $7-$8.”
Rachel writes: “Check Burlington Coat Factory! I didn’t find many pants/shorts that fit me, but they had tons of cute maternity shirts that were good brands. I don’t think I ever paid more than $10 for a shirt… most of them were for $5 – $6!”
Stephanie writes: “I found a bunch at Burlington Coat Factory – almost all of the jeans, pants, and capris were $9.99 and most of the tops were $3 – $9.”
Burlington Shopping Hacks
Tobelina writes: “Check Thrift stores, consignment shops, garage sales, Craiglist and… EBAY! Lots of moms sell their gently used maternity stuff off in a big lot – so you can get a whole wardrobe of good basics all in similar/same sizes.”
Tiffany writes: “I bought lots on Ebay… consignment shops are a great option, too!!!!”
Denon writes: “Ask any and all you friends that have had kids if you can borrow theirs. Most people save them especially when they plan on having more kids. My best friend in California also just found a ton of them for cheap on Craigslist. Thrift stores or second hand stores also ROCK for things like that. I know my friends and I always shared ours. Good luck!”
Jenn writes: “Craigslist & Garage Sales were my saving grace! I ended up with a pretty fantastic pregnancy wardrobe for next to nothing — & have gotten tons of compliments on how cute my clothes are!”
Heather writes: “I bought second hand. My things were such good quality that I passed them on to 2 other mommas afterwards!”
Garage Sale Tips and Tricks for Success
Andrea writes: “I found maternity clothes at Goodwill (go to the one in the nicer section of town they have the better “name brand” stuff) and also eBay lot sales. I got several pairs of pants and about 10 shirts for around 40 dollars from a lot sale.”
Jori writes: “I got on eBay and got like 20 shirts for the price of two new ones (including shipping!) There are some great deals on eBay but you have to LOOK for them.”
Jill writes: “I got some off eBay … you can look for “maternity lots.” Watch out though, you have to be picky since shipping can be a lot too.”
Shelbi writes: “I LOVE eBay for cheap maternity clothes! I got 2 pairs of motherhood secret panel shorts for 99 cents plus shipping! You can really get some bargains!”
Sarah writes: “I got a bag of business clothes for $50. My mom had to shorten all the pants for me. I got 1 good pair of jeans from the maternity shop.”
Dina writes: “In addition to eBay & thrift stores, I also made some of mine.”
One reader writes: “I made my own! First, I got a good pattern and different kinds of fabric. I had visited a maternity store and saw how expensive dresses were and I copied some of the ideas. Neckline details! Bows! I am a professional and had to wear a dress everyday. Buying large dresses at a thrift shop works, too!”
Sharon writes: “I knew how to sew, so I made most of my clothes. I was working in an office setting so dress up clothes were expected. So I made dresses that were A-line. I made 4-5 from the same pattern, but in different colors. I chose black, brown, gray and a checked pattern.”
Debra writes: “I made mine for my first 2 pregnancies.”
Easy Sewing Tips
Kim writes: “Walmart had some really cute maternity clothes as did Kohl’s…always reasonable and I shared with friends who shared with friends…always a good resource, too!”
Katie writes: “Ross has the best maternity clothes, and very reasonably priced.”
Phyllis writes: “I used hand-me-downs from a cousin, women at work lent me stuff, and got jeans from thrift store.”
Ashlee writes: “Got a couple of cheap staple items (2 leggings 1 jeans) a couple of tops, and a bag of freebies off Marketplace. Will pass along when I’m done with them.”
Delorse writes: “Leggings, they stretch with you!”
Jacqueline writes: “I lived in a sarong at the end of my pregnancy. It was a hot, hot summer.”
Jill writes: “A few final thoughts:
1. You wouldn’t believe the amount of maternity clothes on clearance racks in stores at any given time!
2. Spread the word that you’re looking and have people call you when they see any deals!
3. Ask friends and family if they have any they would be willing to part with.
4. Ebay is another GREAT resource. Since new clothes are only worn about 4-5 months MAX of a pregnancy, they’re generally in really good shape!
5. My mom also suggests using your own pants, undo them and literally sew a spandex panel from one side to the other to allow for stretching!
Happy pregnancy!! 😉”
