Keep Homemade Cookies Fresh Longer
“To keep homemade cookies soft and fresh longer, my Aunt used to place completely cooled cookies in a cookie jar {or you could use an airtight container}, and then just place a slice of fresh bread on top. The bread will keep the cookies soft and fresh! If there are still cookies left after a few days, you can toss the old dried out piece of bread with a new piece of bread!”

Cookietester says
To keep my cookies soft and close to as baked fresh, I add 1 teaspoon of organic cornstarch and 1/4 teaspoon of organic citric acid to each cup of flour. People can adjust those additives for their cookie recipes. I love making cookies but don’t eat many, my dough freezes extremely well and once baked, the cookies can be kept in a plastic container for up to a month. Occasionally I will eat a cookie at night if I have not eaten enough, so having some cookies sitting around is a benefit.

The bread really does work. I have used that for years. When I would send my boys in the Army cookies or brownies it worked great to keep them fresh until the boys got them.
Marlene Sowek says
I always put a piece of wax paper the size of the bread slice under the bread. Since I live alone they don’t get eaten that fast. I found that just putting the bread on the cookies made the ones it was sitting on too soft & sometimes mushy and I had to literally scoop the cookies out that got that way. Of course, when my children were small they didn’t loast long enough to get hard.

A piece of fresh apple works, too.
Barbara says
I am sure that the bread put in to soften up or keep cookies soft works. If brown sugar gets hard, or to keep it from getting hard, put a slice of bread in the container and the brown sugar will always remain soft and ready to use.
Renee says
This really does work. I have also used this when cookies are bit overdone. It softens them up and we don’t have to throw them out.
