Cookie dough will last up to 3 months in the freezer.

Most cookie dough freezes beautifully, but if cookies are dipped in chocolate, or rolled in powder sugar, those are the types of doughs you DON’T want to freeze.

Also, I tend to skip freezing cookie doughs made with M&M’s, as those have the tendency to crack.

For common cookie doughs like chocolate chip or other candy mix-ins, here’s what you’ll do…

1. Prepare dough per instructions on your favorite Cake Mix Cookie Recipe or traditional cookie recipe.

2. Allow dough to chill in refrigerator for approx. 1 hour.

3. Roll dough into balls, and place on cookie sheet. (you can squeeze in quite a few, as you won’t need to leave room for them to spread).

4. Place cookie sheet in freezer for at least 1 hour, or until cookie dough balls have frozen.

5. Carefully pop frozen cookie dough balls off of cookie sheet, and place in freezer ziploc bag.

6. When ready to bake… place frozen cookie dough balls on cookie sheet (allowing room for cookies to spread when baking), and set aside… allowing them to come to room temperature. (approx. 15 minutes)

7. Once they have thawed, bake as normal per original Cake Mix Cookie recipe instructions. As a reminder, you may want to write on the bag the date they were frozen, the temperature to bake at, and the length of baking time.

ENJOY!

Another simple trick is freezing cookie dough in logs! I love to use this trick when baking up a traditional batch of chocolate chip cookies.

Betty writes: “I roll cookie dough in log shape and wrap in plastic. Then just slice and bake.”

Here’s what I do…

1. Chill cookie dough in the fridge for 1 hour.

2. Tear off 4 squares of wax paper. (about 12″ x 12″)

3. Divide chilled cookie dough in 4 equal portions.

4. Shape each portion into a log, and wrap up in the wax paper.

5. Transfer wrapped cookie dough logs to gallon freezer bag, label, and zip up.

6. Store in the freezer up to 3 months.

7. When ready to bake, simply slice off a portion of dough about 1/2″ thick for each cookie and bake as usual.

Just keep an eye on your cookies as bake time will vary… the cookies will be baking from a frozen state, so the time needed to bake might be fairly similar.

Bake until golden brown, and increase the bake time by about 1 – 3 minutes if necessary.

Elizabeth writes: “I just put the batch of prepared cookie dough in a freezer bag and spread it out so it fills the whole bag, then put deep indentations 1 inch across and over. Freeze, then break off what you need later.”

How to Freeze Baked Cake Mix Cookies

If you’d like to freeze cake mix cookies that have already been baked, you can do that, too!

After cookies have completely cooled, flash freeze baked cookies on a cookie sheet for 1 hour.

After cookies have frozen for 1 hour, line freezer safe container with plastic wrap, layer cookies in container with a layer of wax paper, and freeze up to 2 months.
