Stove Top Swiss Casserole Recipe

A special thanks to Frugal Girls reader FashionFrugality, for providing the inspiration behind this tasty recipe!  I altered it just a bit, and here’s what I came up with…

Stove Top Swiss Casserole

What You’ll Need:

  • Rotisserie Chicken
  • 1 pkg Swiss Cheese
  • 1 16 oz. box Ziti Noodles {or Whole Wheat Penne}
  • 1 cup Sour Cream {or Light Sour Cream}
  • 1 box Stove Top Chicken Stuffing {or Whole Wheat Stuffing}
  • 2 cans Cream of Chicken soup

What You’ll Do:

Boil Ziti Noodles, then set aside.  Then, shred Rotisserie Chicken…

Stir together: Shredded Chicken, Soup & Cooked Noodles…

In separate bowl, mix together {uncooked} Stove Top Stuffing and sour cream…

Spread chicken/noodle mixture in lightly sprayed casserole dish.

Cover with thin layer of stuffing/sour cream mixture.

Then, place a layer of Swiss Cheese slices on top.

Bake {uncovered} at 350 degrees for 25 minutes… then ENJOY!!

My hubby & boys gave this recipe 3 Thumbs Up! ;)   Give it a try, and see what you think!

Do you need to cook the stuffing first?

  2. Heidi @ Frugal Girls! says:

No, you don't need to cook the stuffing first. It will soften up in the oven. :)

    Mmmmm! Looks delicious!

We are not normally Stove Top fans but once in awhile I like to have it in a recipe, especially casseroles. I used to make this one recipe that had pork chops topped with apple pie filling and Stove Top on top and baked in the oven. It was delish!

    :)

  9. Christi @ A Southern Life says:

Sounds delish! Good luck on the challenge.

I’m making this as we speak! I just finished putting it all together and am putting it in the oven at this moment and BOY does it smell GOOD!!

  22. Linda says:

Sounds REALLY good! I love to make stuffed mushrooms with Stove Top–saute the chopped stems in a bit of butter, mix with prepared stuffing, and parmesan cheese and use that to fill the caps. I put a little bit of wine in the bottom of the pan and bake at 325 for 20 minutes or so. Really easy and great for parties!

  23. Mummy made this last night!! Daddy LOVED it!!
Definitely a keeper and added to our recipe book.

  26. Terri says:

Will give it a try tonight. What are Ziti noodles? Hope we can find some.

  27. Terri says:

BTW, what camera do you all use to take such good pictures?

  28. Heidi says:

Hi Terri ~ Ziti noodles are similar to Penne noodles. You could substitute those as well. Oh, and my camera is a Sony Cyber-Shot ~ I love it! ;)

So what can be used instead of stove top? Worried about the carbs? and my hubby isn’t a fan of stove top..lol.. any suggestions.. Sounds so yummy!!!!

  30. Steph says:

Hm…. I’m wondering how many calories are in this recipe?

    • LouAnne says:

I was wondering when someone was going to mention the calories in this recipe- it sounds delicious, but LOADED with fat and calories! Yikes!!!!

  31. Anne says:

I was thinking you definitely can make this lower fat by using light sour cream, reduced fat swiss & 98% fat free cream of chicken soup. Never buy stuffing so I would have to check into that. Oh if you like wheat pasta you can use that(I don’t!)

  32. Janet says:

I made something similar tonight in the Crockpot… Swiss Chicken w/ Mushrooms.. No noodles with mine and used chicken breasts instead of rotisserie but it was delicious.

  33. Dawn says:

Well I have not made this version but I do one that is similar. I take chicken and line the bottom of a pan (so breasts would be good) then on top put stove top stuffing then a layer of swiss and then mix together a cream of chicken OR cream of celery with a can of milk and pour it over the top – then bake it for a hour on 350. You do have to cook the stove top first though. Super easy though – and my 2 year old likes it! (BONUS!! :)

  34. Jessica says:

This is a great recipe! I’ve made it and the kids love it because of it SO cheesy!!!

  35. Stacey says:

I’ve made something very similar to this before and it is very yummy!

  36. Julie says:

That sounds so good and sounds kind of similar to a crock pot recipe that my family loves. I don’t know where this recipe came from but it’s so easy and so delicious!

    Swiss Chicken Casserole
6 chicken breasts (I use froz., boneless, skinless, breasts)
    6 slices Swiss cheese
10 3/4 ounces cream of mushroom soup, canned (I use 2 cans)
    1/4 cup milk
2 cups stuffing mix (I use a whole box of Stove Top)
    1/2 cup butter, melted

    Directions
    1. Lay chicken breasts in slow cooker. ( I put mine in frozen)
    2. Top with cheese.
    3. Combine soup and milk and spoon over cheese.
    4. Sprinkle stuffing mix on top. Drizzle melted butter over stuffing mix.
    5. Cover; cook on Low 8-10 hours or High 3-4 hours.

  37. Jessica says:

I will be making this tonight!

  38. Billie says:

  40. jess b. says:

just made this for dinner tonight and it is FABULOUS. grabbed the ‘savory’ flavored rotisserie chicken at supertarget. when i went to grab the cream of chicken soup i noticed that the brand name (campbell’s) are actually cheaper than the market pantry brand this week!

absolutely delicious — this is going into the regular rotation. thank you so much for the recipe :)

  41. Monica says:

I have a very picky husband. He’s not liking the idea of the sour cream in this meal. Is there anyway I can omit this ingredient or replace it with something else??

  42. Kathleen says:

    Comfort food at its finest!

  43. Maddy Han says:

Are you supposed to add water to the soup before you put it with the turkey and ziti?
