Cook Time8 mins
Total Time10 mins
Course: Sides
Cuisine: American
Servings: 2 cups

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons Butter
  • 1/4 cup All Purpose Flour
  • 1 3/4 cups Chicken Broth {or one 14.5 oz can}
  • 1/4 cup Milk
  • 1 tablespoon Chicken Bouillon {Chicken Base can be substituted}
  • 1/4 teaspoon Onion Powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon Black Pepper

Instructions

  • Add butter to a 10 – 12″ skillet, and melt over medium-high heat.
  • Then add flour to skillet, stirring constantly until combined with the butter. Immediately after that, begin to whisk in the chicken broth, about 1/4 cup at a time…. whisking continually.
  • After all chicken broth has been added, continue whisking as you add in the Milk, Chicken Bouillon, Onion Powder, and Black Pepper.
  • Whisk for a few more minutes as the gravy thickens, then serve and ENJOY!

Notes

This gravy is best served immediately, but leftovers can also be saved and reheated for later.  Store in refrigerator and use within 2 days, or freeze and use within 1 week.  When it comes time to reheat, simply warm up in a small pot on the stove, and whisk in some additional milk to smooth out any lumps.

    I am very fortunate to have a husband who cooks well. He wouldn’t be caught dead serving a store-bought gravy, and long ago conquered the fine art of delicious gravy!

    With a gravy this easy, there is no reason to be buying the stuff in a can. Homemade is always better. We actually may made a whole chicken instead of turkey this year as it may just be a few of us. We will use the juices from the chicken and your recipe. Stay well and take care

    Dear Heidi,
    that sounds like an excellent sauce. So far, I’ve only known chicken sauce when I’ve roasted a chicken in the oven – the aromatic juice that is created by roasting is a “chicken sauce” for me. But I like the idea of making the sauce without the chicken.
    Thank you for your comment on my photos of Fall colors. You made me really aware again that in many countries around the world it is something very special to see any leaves changing color. I love autumn, even if it means that the weather is sometimes unfriendly and the cold winter is approaching.
    By the way – for me Arizona is something very special. We were there in 2012 – including the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon National Park and Page / Lake Powell / Antelope Canyon. What breathtaking landscapes! If you are interested in my travel report from back then, here is an overview (from there you can click your way to the individual chapters.) :
