The secret to perfectly thick gravy is adding in All Purpose Flour. It’s the perfect thickener when making homemade gravy for chicken and dressing.

So what is chicken gravy made of?

Well, you’ll just need a few simple ingredients to make your own creamy chicken gravy.

First, check your pantry and refrigerator. Then add the following to your next grocery list to make sure you’ve got everything on hand…

  • Salted Butter – the higher quality the butter, the better the flavor!
  • All Purpose Flour – to thicken your gravy.
  • Chicken Broth – a simple shortcut… no drippings needed!
  • Whole Milk – for the ultimate rich, creamy flavor!
  • Chicken Bouillon – Chicken Base can be substituted.
  • Onion Powder
  • Black Pepper

How to Make Chicken Gravy from Scratch

1. Melt your butter in skillet on the stove, then add in your flour and stir.

2. Whisk in chicken broth, then add in all remaining ingredients.

Chicken Gravy Recipe

This Chicken Gravy Recipe is so simple to make, outrageously delicious, and will put any store bought gravy to shame! It will instantly take your mashed potatoes to the next level, and takes just 10 minutes to make! No drippings needed!

Ingredients 

  • 3 tablespoons Salted Butter
  • 1/4 cup All Purpose Flour
  • 1 3/4 cups Chicken Broth (or one 14.5 oz can)
  • 1/4 cup Milk
  • 1 tablespoon Chicken Bouillon, (Chicken Base can be substituted)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Onion Powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon Black Pepper

Instructions 

  • Gather your ingredients.
    Gravy ingredients including onion powder, pepper, and milk.
  • Add butter to a 10 – 12″ skillet, and melt over medium-high heat.
  • Then add flour to skillet, stirring constantly until combined with the butter. Immediately after that, begin to whisk in the chicken broth, about 1/4 cup at a time…. whisking continually.
  • After all chicken broth has been added, continue whisking as you add in the Milk, Chicken Bouillon, Onion Powder, and Black Pepper.
  • Whisk for a few more minutes as the gravy thickens, then serve and ENJOY!

Notes

  • This gravy is best served immediately, but leftovers can also be saved and reheated for later.  Store in refrigerator and use within 2 days, or freeze and use within 1 week.
  • When it comes time to reheat, simply warm up in a small pot on the stove, and whisk in some additional milk to smooth out any lumps.
