Can you use chicken thighs instead?
Heidi says
Hi Sarah ~ Absolutely! You can definitely substitute thighs… you’ll just want to keep an eye on the cook time. 🙂
Jalesa says
Is this ok without bacon
Heidi says
Hi Jalesa ~ yes, absolutely! This chicken tastes really delicious even without the bacon. ENJOY! 🙂
Cassie says
I will be using chicken tenderloins for the BBQ ranch recipe does it cook less? TIA
Heidi says
Hi Cassie ~ yes… smaller pieces should cook faster. Just keep an eye on them for cook time. I haven’t tried this recipe with tenderloins, but if you do… let me know how long they take. I’d love to hear!
Monica says
I’m curious with what else you serve your with bbq ranch chicken ?
Heidi says
Hi Monica,
I like serving these Loaded Mashed Potatoes (https://thefrugalgirls.com/2014/10/bacon-lovers-loaded-smashed-potatoes.html) or this Sweet and Sour Coleslaw (https://thefrugalgirls.com/2014/06/sweet-and-sour-coleslaw-recipe.html) with the BBQ Ranch Chicken.
Hope these give you some fun ideas ~ Heidi
Deby Talley says
Here is idea for you “Chicken & Dumpling” You can try it if you like and see what you think or just delete. I call it “homemade chicken noodle soup” in the summer and in the winter it becomes “chicken & Dumplings. I use the flour tortilla shells and cut them in strips add to boiling broth then add rest of ingredients. In summer I use carrots onion celery (and fresh veggies) chicken, noodles and can of cream of chicken. In the winter I use more chicken, broth, cream of chicken, cream of mushroom and flour tortilla strips. My Mom use to make homemade dumpling so thin they were like noodles plus I could never get the can biscuits to turn into dumplings. It”s worth a try and great for potluck dinners/suppers and easy. I use them fresh or frozen. Enjoy
Heidi says
That sounds so delicious, Deby… thanks for sharing!!
Tammy says
Hey I am trying your bbq ranch chicken in crockpot . I just noticed my hidden valley salad dressing mix is buttermilk recipe. Can I use this with the same result ?
Heidi says
Hi Tammy ~ if you’d like you can substitute a Homemade Buttermilk Dressing, but just make sure it’s in powdered form. Here’s a copycat Hidden Valley Recipe you could use, that uses dry Buttermilk in it…

Kathleen says
Hi – all of your recipes have them being cooked at a HIGH setting – I often times prep in the morning and then leave it to cook all day. What is the conversion from HIGH to LOW setting? How many hours on LOW?
Thanks.
D_Dub says
I tried this recipe last weekend and cooked it on low for 6 hours. I just googled a conversion chart and took a chance. No mushy chicken. Yea! Very delicious. I never thought about draining the juice, thanks for that new info! 🙂 Since I have little guys at home, I cut the chicken into strips before slow cooking them. I’m ready to try another recipe ma’am. There so pocket friendly!
Heidi says
Aww ~ so glad you liked it! 🙂
Linda says
I love the recipes AND that colorful crockpot! Could you please email me and let me know where I could get one like it? My daughters want one too! Thanks
Heidi says
Hi Linda ~ are you referring to the colorful chevron Crock Pot? If so, I found that one at Target. 🙂
Jaime says
hi.. If my chicken is slightly frozen.. Should I wait until it’s completely defrosted first, before throwing in the slow cooker for the initial 3 hours?.. Or is it ok to throw in partially frozen… & up the time?… I’m new to this whole crockpot cooking stuff!.. Lol… Thanks in advance! 🙂
Heidi says
Hi Jaime ~ if it’s still slightly frozen, just increase the time a bit to compensate for that. Hope that helps, and ENJOY! 🙂
Stephanie says
If you use frozen chicken, how long would you cook it?
Nomi says
I have used completely frozen chicken and it is almost always done in the same amount of time as thawed chicken. Leave an extra 1/2 hour of time just in case!
Tamara says
Do I season the chicken also ? Or just put it in the crockpot plain
Heidi says
Hi Tamara ~ no need to season the chicken on this recipe… you’ll just start it in the crockpot plain. Hope that helps! 🙂
Kayla says
Do I cook the bacon first. Before I mix it all together?
Heidi says
Hi Kayla ~ you’ll cook the bacon until crispy first prior to mixing all together. Hope that helps! 😉
Josephine Batten says
As I can’t buy Hidden Valley Products where I live can you please tell me if the “Ranch Salad Dressing & Seasoning Mix” is a dry or liquid mix because I’d love to try to make your “BBQ Bacon Ranch Chicken”.
Sharon Dando says
I cannot get the Ranch Salad products either. I used Paul Newmans Ranch Dressing in the recipes that I have seen.
Heidi says
Hi Josephine ~ I just created a copycat version of the Hidden Valley Ranch ranch dressing mix. It’s a dry mix, and you could substitute it in this recipe… hope that helps! 🙂
Here’s a link to the recipe:

I’ve just come across your site by accident, but love it already. I live in Sydney – Australia and absolutely love your recipes. Sadly I can’t always get some of the ingredients, but try to find copies through Google as they’re my best bet. The copies may not be quite as good as your original, but “one can’t kick a gift horse in the mouth” as we Ozzies say. Keep up the good recipes coming as I’ll look forward to making more.
Lisa says
Hi 🙂 Could you also use this a pulled chicken on some sort of roll?
Heidi says
Hi Lisa ~ absolutely! This would taste delicious shredded and served on a roll or bun. Enjoy! 😉
Dave says
Just wanted to thank you for glorifying Christ on your site!!!
Michelle says
They all sound delicious!
michelle says
All your recipes say cook chicken then add ingredients what are you cooking the chicken in when your draining it and then adding ingredients? For instance you bacon bbq ranch chicken?
Heidi says
Hi Michelle ~ the chicken will end up cooking in its own juices. Just start by placing the chicken only in the crockpot, and you’ll drain the juices later before adding the sauce. Hope that helps! 😉
Pat Cody says
Wondering why you drain the juices. I cook chicken all the time in my crockpot and have never done that. Should I? Usually I just add everything from the get go so it never occurred to me to drain any juices from the chicken. Now I’m curious why all your wonderful recipes include that step.
Heidi says
Hi Pat ~ by draining the juices you’ll end up with a thicker more flavorful sauce, as opposed to a more watered down sauce. 🙂
