I have made this it is great but have u doubled the recipe? how much long will it need to cook I have a 8qt. crockpot and need to some hungry men
Amber says
This looks great I plan on making it tomorrow! I only have refrigerated hashbrowns though, will this cut down the cook time? Thanks!!
Heidi says
Hi Amber… I honestly haven’t tried with refrigerated hashbrowns. You would definitely need to cut the cook time, but I’m not sure how the consistency will turn out. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes!
Nia says
What settings could I use to make this in a pressure cooker?
Heidi says
Hi Nia ~ I honestly haven’t ever made this in a pressure cooker, but if you do… let me know how it turns out!
Kara says
About to try! Hope it works!
Lisa says
If I used cream of chicken soup instead would I still use the evaporated milk or regular milk
Heidi says
Hi Lisa ~ you’ll still want to use the evaporated milk, as regular milk has the tendency to curdle in the crockpot. Hope that helps! 🙂
Tanya says
Has anyone tried to make this with riced cauliflower instead of hash browns? I’m trying to think of ways to make this healthier.
Heidi says
I honestly haven’t tried that, Tanya… but if you do, let me know how it turns out!
Christie says
This is totally making me drool! I really love potatoes but when you top it off with some sausage it’s pure heaven in my mouth! Thanks for sharing this one!
Heidi says
You’re very welcome, Christie! They really are the perfect match, aren’t they? 🙂
DJ says
Could you use almond milk instead of evaporated milk?
Heidi says
I’ve honestly never tried that DJ, but if you do… let me know how it turns out!
Elise says
how would you recommend adding eggs to this dish? I was thinking about using beat eggs instead of the canned soup, but I wasn’t sure.
Thanks !
Heidi says
Hi Elise… I’ve honestly never tried it that way – if you do, let me know how it turns out! 🙂
Leisa McWatters says
Has anyone made a low carb version of this with cauliflower instead of potatoes?
Amy says
Do I need to cook the sausage before adding it to the crockpot?
Heidi says
Hi Amy ~ as long as you use the precooked kielbasa sausage, you won’t need to cook it before adding it to the crockpot. Hope that helps! 🙂
Melissa says
I bought frozen uncooked sausage, would u cook them before putting in crockpot? Or would unthaw and put them in there cut up?
Heidi says
Hi Melissa ~ if you’ll be substituting uncooked sausage, you will want to cook your sausage first, then add it to the crockpot. Hope that helps!
Michelle says
Can I use real potatoes instead of hashbrowns?
Heidi says
Hi Michelle ~ I honestly haven’t tried, but I would be concerned they might not hold their from as well. You could try shredding and freezing your own potatoes and using those as a substitute to store bought hash browns. Hope that helps!
Amy says
This was soooo yummy. My husband loved it and kids ate it. That says a lot. I have picky teenagers ha. The only alterations I made was I added 1-2 tablespoons minced onion (I didn’t measure, I just poured it in)., and I didn’t measure the garlic, but I used the minced kind you buy in the jar, I think I used a little less than what the recipe called for. I also added a little shredded mexican cheese on top (it’s the only kind I had on hand at the time). This will be something I fix regularly. I am a mom of 3 and work 2-3 nights a week and the other days, I work days or half days and I sleep during the day. So this is super easy to throw in the crock pot and let it cook while I sleep before I go back to work again for the night. Easy way to feed the family. I heated up some black eyes peas to have as a side dish with it.
I didn’t have time to thaw my hash browns, so I put them in a big bowl and heated in the microwave for 30 seconds, stirred it and put it on another 30 seconds. It all worked out good.
Heidi says
I’m so glad to hear your hubby and teens loved this dish, Amy! Thanks for sharing your delicious twists, too… I’m happy to know this will be something you can fix regularly with your busy schedule. 🙂
Angela Maus says
I’m going to try this in my pressure cooker tonight.
Lindsey says
How did it turn out? Wanting to try in the pressure cooker tonight.
Mary says
I forgot to thaw the potatoes so put them in frozen and also put the entire can of evaporated milk which is only 1/4 cup extra…. turned out delicious!!!! This is definitely a new favorite.
Heidi says
That’s good to know it worked that way too, Mary… and I’m so glad to hear you loved it!
Erica says
I used the entire can of evaporated milk instead of carefully reading that it needs 1 1/4
Still hoping it turns out good!!
April says
We made this tonight and oh my yumminess!! It says 8 servings. How much is a serving? 1 cup?
Angie says
Can you freeze the leftovers?
Thanks,
Angie
Heidi says
I honestly haven’t tried that Angie… with teenage boys and a hungry hubby we’ve never gotten as far as having leftovers. 🙂 If you do try freezing the leftovers, let me know how it goes!
Jenna says
This is soooo good !! Even my picky boys had seconds
Heidi says
Aww… so glad to hear you all loved it, Jenna! 🙂
Tiffany says
We have a non-cheese eater at home. Even the can of cheese soup would make him not want this at all. Can I use Cream of Celery or something similar to the cheese soup without the cheese? lol
Thanks!
Alicia says
Can I use any kind of sausage?
Heidi says
Hi Alicia,
This tastes great with the other varieties of Hillshire Farm sausage as well, like the cooked Smoked Sausage links. Hope that helps!
Angela says
Instead of evaporated milk, can I use regular milk? Also I couldn’t find the soup can. So can I use real cheese instead?
Heidi says
Hi Angela,
The evaporated milk will prevent curdling and the cheese soup can will ensure the cheese melts properly. If you try substituting the soup can for cheese, let me know how it turns out!
Sue says
Hi…Can I cut this recipe in half? We are a small household. Thanks.
Heidi says
Yes… you can easily cut this one in half. Just keep an eye on the cook time, as it may cook a bit faster.
Russell says
Can this recipe be used if I don’t have a crock pot? Can I bake
It in the oven?
Thanks
Russell

Heidi says
Hi Russell,
I haven’t made this exact recipe in the oven, however you could try making this Hashbrown Casserole Recipe {below} in a 9×13 casserole dish in the oven and add sliced Kielbasa to it…
