When it comes to Thanksgiving… Old Fashioned Apple Pie is a classic.
It’s perfectly sweet and tart, completely nostalgic, and each bite tastes like a cozy autumn hug!
But did you know there’s a secret ingredient that can send your apple pie out of the stratosphere? You guessed it… it’s caramel sauce!
With sun-kissed apples, gooey caramel, and a buttery flaky crust, this Caramel Apple Pie will vanish before your eyes!
Carol writes: "I made this pie. This recipe was perfect and easy to follow. Made me feel like a professional pie maker! Everyone loved it. It was beautiful and delicious!!"
You see, making a pie from scratch is so much easier than you think… and it’s always worth it!
First, you get to create phenomenal flavors you can only get when you make a pie at home. No canned filling can compare to what we’ll be making here.
Then, you get to become like an ar-teest! (You know, the fancy way of saying artist?)
When it comes time to decorate the top crust, it’s like having arts and crafts time in the kitchen.
You can put on your little beret, and create any kind of pretty pattern your heart desires! Okay, okay… the beret is optional, but you get the idea.
And once you realize how easy it is to make homemade pies, you’ll definitely want to bake up this tart Blackberry Pie and this sweet Blueberry Pie, too!

Ingredients
You’ll just need the following delicious ingredients to make the BEST Caramel Apple Pie…
- Granny Smith Apples – they’ll give your pie the perfect tart bite!
- Lemon – to brighten up the flavors, and keep the apples from browning.
- Sugar – just your standard Granulated Sugar (white sugar).
- All Purpose Flour – to thicken up the pie filling.
- Cinnamon – to add a cozy warmth to your pie filling.
- Nutmeg – to complement the sweetness of the pie.
- Salt – to bring out all of the dreamy flavors, and add that hint of salted caramel flavor we all love!
- Allspice – to add additional warmth and depth of flavor.
- Caramel Sauce – the star of the pie!
- Pie Crusts – you can use store bought or Homemade Pie Crusts.
- Egg – for the egg wash on top. It will add that beautiful golden-brown glossy finish to your crust!
- Milk – also for the egg wash.
- Turbinado Sugar – a cane sugar with larger crystals, used for topping on the pie crust. It’s also called ‘Sugar in the Raw’.
Supplies Needed
Making this Caramel Apple Pie is so much easier when you have the right tools. So make sure to round up these tools to ensure pie making success!
9″ or 9.5″ Pie Plate – my favorites are jus the basic glass pie dishes.
Johnny Apple Peeler – I don’t know what I’d do without my Johnny Apple Peeler! I seriously love it, and it makes getting the job of peeling and thin slicing your apples so fast and EASY! If you don’t have one, just make sure to slice your apples thin and in uniform thickness, no more than 1/4″ thick.

Leaves and Acorn Pastry Stampers Set – No pie is complete without a cute top crust… and this is the exact stamper set I have and use to make the fun leaf shapes on my pies.

Pizza Wheel – I use my pizza wheel to slice my lattice top crust, and it works like a charm! It’s sharp, precise, and so easy to work with!
Pastry Brush – I use the OXO Pastry Brush… it has extra layers of bristles to get the job done without clumping!
Pie Crust Shield – These will help keep your pie crust from burning. I’ve been using them for years and years, and love them! Or you can make your own DIY Pie Crust Shield using aluminum foil.

How To Make Caramel Apple Pie
1. Start by preheating your oven.
2. Take your store bought or Homemade Pie Crust, and carefully place it into your pie dish.
3. Thinly slice and peel your apples.
4. Then combine the sugar, flour, and spices.
5. Pour this dry mixture over the apples, then transfer the apple mixture to your pie dish.
6. Drizzle the top of your apples with the caramel sauce.
7. Then wrap up your pie by creating your top crust design.

8. Once you’ve finished your top crust design, take your egg wash and brush it onto the top of your crust.

I like to use a good quality OXO pastry brush to brush the egg wash on with.

9. Then finish your pie by evenly sprinkling the top of the crust with Turbinado Sugar.
10. Set your pie on a cookie sheet and slide it into your preheated oven.
11. Bake your caramel apple pie per the instructions in the below recipe card.

Doubling Recipe Tip
If doubling or tripling recipe with buttons below, ingredient notes found after comma will not adjust. Increase ingredients as needed.
Ingredients
- 6 cups peeled & thin-sliced Granny Smith Apples, (approx. 4-5 medium apples)
- 2 tsp. Fresh-Squeezed Lemon Juice
- 1 cup Granulated (White) Sugar
- 4 tbsp. All-Purpose Flour
- 1 tsp. Ground Cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. Ground Nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp. Salt
- 1/8 tsp. Allspice
- 1/2 cup Smucker's Caramel Sauce, (or similar salted caramel sauce)
- Two 9" Pie Crusts (Homemade or Pillsbury Refrigerated Crusts)
- Egg Wash: 1 Large Egg, beaten well + 1 tbsp. Milk + a pinch of Salt
- Pie Crust Topping: 1.5 tsp. Turbinado Sugar , (Sugar in the Raw)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
- Place one pie crust in 9" pie dish. Trim and fold edges over, then crimp, pinch, or flute around the entire edge.
- Peel, then thinly slice your apples. I use a Johnny Apple Peeler to get the job done in a jiffy!
- In a large bowl, mix together apple slices and lemon juice until all apples are well coated.
- Then over your apples, add Sugar, Flour, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Salt, and Allspice to same bowl, and stir until all has been well combined.
- Transfer apple mixture into pie crust you've rolled out in your pie dish. Using your hands, pack your apples down tightly into the dish.
- Drizzle Caramel Sauce evenly over apple mixture.
- Now transfer your pie to the refrigerator... it's time to work on your lattice!
- When placing the pie crust on top, make sure to leave adequate holes or gaps for venting. I like to roll it out on a cutting board and slice a variety of sizes of dough strips, using my pizza cutter. Then you can weave in a lattice pattern. You can even take 3 long and narrow slices of pie crust dough and braid it to add some additional fun texture. Or cut out little leaves or acorns with Pastry Stampers to add some fun designs to the crust! The design options are endless!
- Once you've laid out your top crust, it's time for the egg wash.
- Beat 1 Large Egg well, then stir in 1 tbsp. Milk plus a pinch of salt. Dip your pastry brush in the egg mixture, and brush over the entire top and outer edges of your pie crust.
- Once you've finished your Egg Wash, sprinkle the top of your crust with 1.5 tsp. Turbinado Sugar.
- Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.
- After 20 minutes, add your Pie Crust Shield to keep the edges from burning, adjust temperature to 375 degrees, and bake for 40 - 45 more minutes, or until done.
- Transfer to a wire rack and cool for a minimum of 4 hours prior to serving. I like to wait even longer to allow all that apple gooey goodness plenty of time to solidify.
- Slice and serve up with big ol' scoops of vanilla ice cream, and ENJOY!
