#1. Slash your Grocery Bill & Eat Out Less Often (save $300+/mo.)
Now, tackling your food bill is a biggie!
Slashing your food bill really is as simple as not eating out and cooking more at home. The price difference for just one meal is significant, but if you skip eating out 2 times per week for a whole month, the savings really start adding up FAST!
I regularly make a Crockpot Chicken Dinner for $12 or less, including sides. But to take my family of 4 to a typical chain restaurant, dinner can cost $37 or more, and that is excluding drinks, appetizers and sides.
That means eating at home on average will save me $25 per meal. If I skip eating out just 8 times per month I will save $200 on that alone… and so can you!
Now if you already have cut back on eating out… let’s tackle that creeping Grocery Bill!
Grocery bills have a way of getting wildly out of control, don’t they? But the good news is… they’re really easy to trim back, too!

To keep your home cooler, you can also shut your blinds during warmer times of day and run ceiling fans. Also, avoid using your oven if possible. In the summer, I like to use my Crock Pot or have my husband grill outside.
You can save money on heat by using a wood burning store or gas fireplace. Then use extra blankets and layers of clothes to stay warm.
Consider switching to LED light bulbs and putting timers on your lights to avoid having them left on by mistake.
For laundry, try washing your clothes in cold water and hang drying your clothes instead of using the dryer. Then, turn down your hot water heater after you take your showers… and also make sure to time those showers!
Also, try running your appliances only at times each day when electricity is cheaper.
And finally… don’t heat or cool an empty house!

#9. Pay off High Interest Credit Cards First (save up to $600/mo.)
One of the easiest and fastest ways to cut your monthly expenses is by working to eliminate high interest rate debt as fast as possible. If you carried a balance on any of your credit cards because of Christmas gifts and expenses, pay off the credit card with the highest rate first.
First, check your credit card statements and find the interest rate you are being charged. Next, pay off the card with the highest interest rate first. If Card X is charging you 15% and Card Y is charging you 26%, pay off Card Y with the 26% interest rate first!
Here is an example of how much you can save. If you carry a $1000 balance on your Card X with the 15% APR, you could end up paying as much as $350 in interest! But, if you carry that same $1000 balance on your Card Y with the 26% APR, you would end up paying as much as $1,050 in interest. By paying off the highest interest rate card first, you could save as much as $700!
The best advice I can give you is to never have any debt to start with. Always pay the full balance of your credit card each month and never spend more than you have in the bank right now.
One easy way to avoid credit card debt is by creating an emergency savings fund that will cover your average monthly expenses for 3-6 months. I love having an emergency savings fund, it really takes the stress out of unexpected expenses. If that “unexpected expense” does happen, I know I am already prepared and won’t need to use a credit card to pay the bill!
In addition to paying off your credit cards, I’ve got even more tips to help you get rid of your debt. Check out my ideas for How to Snowball Your Debt in 5 easy steps!

#11. Pay Off Car Loan Early by Selling Your Car and Downsizing (save $200+/mo.)
Got an expensive car payment?
When you sell your car and downsize, you can save literally thousands of dollars right now… then continue savings hundreds of dollars every month. Sound good?
If you have enough equity in your car, it’s smart to consider selling your car and downsizing to a less expensive, reliable used sedan instead. This one move can literally save you hundreds of dollars every month.
When you want to save money in a hurry, selling a car with a high monthly payment is absolutely next-level smart. But, if you really want to maximize your savings, make sure you also sell your car privately!
I’ve personally sold 10 cars privately. For my latest sale, I came in pocketing an extra $3,500 more than the trade-in offer for about 15 hours of total work. Not bad, huh?
Not sure where to start?
Use my 12 tested tips for How to Sell My Car Privately to get started!
#12. Cut & Color Your Own Hair (save $100+/mo.)
With the average price for haircuts and colorings always increasing, the total cost of haircuts for you and/or your family can really add up.
For example, women’s haircuts average more than $40, men’s haircuts average more than $25, and hair coloring can cost on average more than $80. These conservative price estimates don’t even include tips! Then, don’t forget the kid haircuts at about $12 each!
When you color your own hair and cut your family’s hair, you can easily save more than $100 per month. You’ll need to invest in some good quality haircutting products upfront, but they’ll pay themselves off so fast. It’s incredible how much money you’ll start saving!
So I personally started cutting my kids’ hair from the time they were about 2 years old, and have been cutting it ever since. I also cut my hubby’s hair, and yes… then I even cut and layer my own! I know, I know… it was scary at first, but thanks to some youtube videos it’s actually not hard at all!
What You’ll Need to Get Started:
- Haircutting Scissors
- Hair Clippers with guards for the guys + a Comb
- Small Spray Bottle
- Hair Cutting Cape
- Optional: Hair Color
Now you’re ready to go! If you haven’t cut hair before, I’d suggest watching a few youtube tutorials for tips, and then just jump in and start. The more you cut it, the easier it will get, and the better your techniques will become. Practice, practice, practice… and you’ll be AMAZED at how much money you’ll save each month!

#13. Slash your Medical Insurance Bill (save $400+/mo. for a family of 4)
One of the best ways to save money fast on any kind of insurance, is to routinely shop around and get quotes from as many insurance companies as possible to get the best rate.
Open enrollment for medical insurance only comes one time a year. That means this is your one chance to shop around for better medical insurance rates, so pay attention to your calendar. If you miss open enrollment, you’ll most likely have to wait a full year to shop for health insurance again.
Open enrollment dates do change from year to year, but open enrollment usually falls sometime within the last 2 months of the year.
#14. Save BIG on Gas With These Sneaky Tricks (save $25/mo.)
Prices at the pump can really pack a punch! So what can you do to save the most money on gas?
To start… I’ve found that what saves the most gas is to combine your errands around town.
Debbie writes: “I am trying to stay home more. I really plan my trips out of the house. I try to go to stores that are by each other. “
Linda writes: “I always do my errands in a circle from one direction around to the last one closest to home, never back and forth.”
Bonnie writes: “I’m planning trips to include as many tasks as I can into one trip to town.”
Megan writes: “I turned our car on Eco Mode, travel less, and walk to do school pickup instead of drive.
Lydia writes: “We share one car and combine trips when possible.”
Stephanie writes: “I bought a bicycle to bike back and forth to work.”
Michelle writes: “I make list of things when needed, and only go out to shop 1 day/ every 2 weeks. And map out/ plan my trips to conserve gas. Also us Moms carpool kids around, instead of everyone driving separately. And I order online, or shop locally so I drive less. Also my family uses a “gas” card and rewards points to save money and earn gift card for free gasoline.”
Debra writes: “I order what I need online, delivered to my door.”
Laura writes: “I drive an electric car and charge it for free at work.”
Suzi writes: “I traded cars with my mom so I could take her hybrid on vacation instead of my SUV.”
Dana writes: “Two years ago we bought a Prius. We can sometimes get 70 mph going down the mountain to town and long trips are much more affordable with the great mileage. The best way to save money is to not spend it.”
More Ways to Save On Gas
Use the lowest octane gas possible and fill up at the pump early in the morning or in the evening. It’s true… heat affects the density of the gas.
Then don’t forget to keep an eye on your tire pressure. Driving your car around with low tire pressure can easily cost you 1-2 miles per gallon of fuel efficiency.
Finally, GasBuddy.com or AAA to find the lowest price gas. Or simply get discounted gas at Costco or Sam’s Club! Then don’t forget about those grocery store gas rewards. They can really add up!
#15. Cancel Your Gym Membership! (save $25/mo.)

When my husband’s parents started growing ill and forgetful, we bought a second home near them and rented out our big home. Now living in a rural area, a lot of the temptations were not available any more. We seldom ate out and here only a McDonalds is available. Yuck! So nothing is ever spent on eating out anymore! I cook at home with all meals made from scratch so I don’t buy any pre-packaged expensive food. We have a whole house outdoor wood furnace so we don’t use any gas or electricity for heat or hot water. Wood has been cheaper. Zero spent on my haircuts anymore as I have “bed head” everyday so it is neater to grow my hair out and put it up in pony-tails and I color it as home. So big big savings there too. Can’t ever make any money by having a garage sale as we live in a rural area and people only want to pay 10 or 25 cents for any item, even if brand new and has a original price tag of $20-$40 on it! I also save money by buying in bulk on things like canned vegetables. I know that we will eat them so when several times a year, our grocery store has half price sales on cases, I really stock up. We do eat a vegetable every day without fail and I also use them for soups and casseroles when seasonal produce is not available at reasonable prices. Our three kids are grown up and have moved on so my savings is not monumental anymore but is still good for just two people!

Some great tips, but as for your advice about the haircutting kits, avoid the bundles. I read the reviews and went with a better quality hair clipper. The cheaper ones are noisy, heat up, vibrate excessively and don’t last as long. I have had a Wahl clipper for six years and it works great, paid for itself many times over. We bought the nylon capes at Sally’s as well as hair clips and neck strips. My chldren get monthly haircuts and I take a seat every other month for hubby to trim and shape my tresses. Saves me hundreds a year with great results. Well worth the effort to do haircuts at home.
Heidi says
Hi Carolyn ~ great tips! Isn’t it amazing how much haircuts at home can save per month? Like you, I cut hair for my kids and hubby each month, and he cuts mine too. It was scary at first, but after all these years I can’t imagine paying for it ever again! 😉
