#1: Organize Your Closet!
First things first… it’s time to spend a little time in your closet. Is it so packed some of your cute pieces have gotten buried? Or do you just find yourself wearing the same things on repeat out of habit?
Before you can take your chic style to the next level, you first need to know what you have to work with, right?

#2: Let Your Tattered & Unflattering Pieces Go
Things with stains, holes, stretched out items, etc. have all seen better days. Today might be the day to just let them go.
You can even repurpose some of them… for example, you can easily cut up an old t-shirt and turn it into 2 large rags or 4 small rags… perfect for Cleaning!
After you’ve gone through your tattered pieces, it’s time to address your unflattering ones. You know the ones… the ones that you never feel good in because of the way they hang, the way the color looks with your skin tone, or just the overall shape of the item.
Once girl’s trash is another girl’s treasure, right?
So if all they’re doing is hanging in your closet never getting worn anyway, why not just let them go to someone else who can put them to use? You can donate them or sell them at a consignment store!

Or you can even consider turning old t-shirts into rags! Simply cut them down in large squares and use them when wiping up spills, dusting furniture, etc…
#3: Host a Clothing Swap Party with Friends
As an alternative to donating or selling your clothes, clothing swap parties are such a great way to share clothes that you no longer need with friends, and fill in the gaps of items you’ve been wanting!
I’ve been to several, and they are so much fun!
Lauri writes: “Plan a clothing swap! This can be done with your friends, a mommy’s group, etc. Simply bring the clothing you or your kids have outgrown, as well as your nice unwanted clothing. Lay the clothes out on tables, and then trade them! Everyone can take what they can use… it’s a great way to get some new clothes for free! I did this once and it was awesome!”
Gail writes: “My apartment complex has a give away table. I get a lot of free clothes and accessories. I also trade with neighbors.”
#4: Know What Colors & Styles Look Best With Your Skin Tone and Body Shape!
Now that you’ve cleaned out your closet… it’s time to make a list of what pieces you’ll be wanting to add to your wardrobe over time. Now this is not a rush… keep it frugal and add pieces over time when you find great deals.
And make sure to only opt for pieces that look well with your body shape and colors that look great with your skin tone.
If you’re not sure, just google ‘Best Colors for my Skintone Quiz” or “Best Styles for my Body Type” to get started.
#5: Create a Capsule Wardrobe!
Have you considered a capsule wardrobe? It’s an absolute game changer! Not only will you have a spacious closet, your pieces will all mix and match with each other, too!
Getting dressed in the morning and looking your best becomes a breeze, because everything goes together, and you only have things in your closet that you absolutely LOVE!
I switched to a capsule wardrobe a few years ago, and it truly changed my life… and shopping habits!
Amy writes: “Don’t buy random clothes based on emotions. Make sure each piece will go with at least 3 items you already have.”
#6: Skip the Aspirational Clothing, and Buy Clothes That Fit Now!
How many times have you bought something you’ve fallen in love with, that’s just a little too small? I know I have!
When we’re honest with ourselves and buy what looks fantastic on us now, we’ll feel great, and will prevent shoving that new purchase into the deep dark corner of our closet in hopes that it will fit ‘later’.
This simple little trick can save a LOT of money!
Christina writes: “Buy what fits. Do no buy clothing 10 pounds from now. Buy less, but better.”
#7: Invest in Quality Pieces That Will Stand the Test of Time!
Rather than buying several cheap things that will wear out fast, I always like to opt for the higher quality item that will last so much longer! It may be more expensive upfront, but I know these items will last a long time, and can actually save money in the long run!
Pay close attention to fabrics when shopping, and always opt for tried and true natural fabrics that have been known to stand the test of time. Some of my favorite natural fabrics to look for include…
- Cotton
- Leather
- Linen
- Silk
- Wool
Not only do they feel so luxurious and classy on… but they can also last SO long!
Shelly writes: “Stop chasing trends. Invest in classics.”
Angie writes: “Buy classic, good quality clothing. You will save money on the long run.”
April writes: “I try to only buy what I need, so no browsing when I go to the store. I also try to buy “traditional” pieces that don’t tend to go out of style; jeans, solid t-shirts, cardigans, etc.”
Hannah writes: “Invest on the front end and then take care of them. I have multiple pairs of leather shoes that are over a decade old that I have re-heeled more than I can count. Clothing is much the same, stick to natural fibers, take care of your clothing (machines are hard on them so wash with awareness), and repair.”
Sonya writes: “Buy good quality, so it lasts. Classic, so it doesn’t go out of style in a month/year. Second hand, because lots of people get rid of some really good stuff, and full price is a lot!
Bella writes: “Buying quality made versatile, classic, timeless items rather than cheaply made trendy fast fashion greatly reduces the need to purchase items as often. Good quality clothing should last several years and never go out of style. Also, repair items if they need a new button or to be stitched up.”
#8: Shop Thrift Stores & Swing By Consignment Shops for Hidden Gems!
Don’t forget the thrift stores or consignment shops! I know it can be hit or miss, but just consider it a treasure hunt. I’ve been able to find some gorgeous, hardly-worn, high-end pieces that have been passed off by previous owners for just a few dollars per piece!
Look for high quality items, name brands, or rare and unique pieces to add to your wardrobe.
Barbara writes: “For my clothes I usually shop at thrift stores, and many of the clothes still have on original tags on the clothing!”
Catherine writes: “Buy nice second hand, even Designer at times, but go to Goodwill or one that has a lot of turnover in stuff!”
Kelly writes: “Goodwill is my favorite. I get so many nice name brand clothes for so cheap.”
Danielle writes: “In the city I live in, we have a “Buy Nothing” page. People are giving away clothes and shoes daily for free.”
Heidi writes: “I thrift shop whenever I can. If you know the brands you’re looking for, you can save lots of money! I buy and sell a ton and make money doing so!”
#9: Always Shop End-of-Season Clearance Sales
End-of-season clearance sales really are one of the EASIEST ways to save big on clothing. You may not be able to wear what you buy right away, but you’ll be all stocked up and ready to go with cute new items for next year!
It’s always fun having things to look forward to, and you’ll love knowing you scored such a great deal!
Cindy writes: “Shop the clearance racks first!”
Bonnie writes: “Buy clothes at the end of season sales. Don’t forget to sign up for store rewards programs for additional savings.”
Donna writes: “I buy out of season clearance and store it. Winter clothing is deeply discounted in the Spring. Spring and Summer will go on deep discount in Late August.”
#10: Don’t Forgo Comfort!
Sometimes the temptation can be to buy those cute shoes… even though they’re half a size too small. Or to wear that adorable outfit, that you can barely even move around in, right?
Well… here are a few things to consider when putting together your outfits…
How to Be Comfortable in Heels All Day
- Consider going up 1/2 size for Mid-Sized Heels and up to 1 whole size for Higher Heels. They will be SO much more comfortable when wearing them throughout the day.
- Be more comfortable in all of your shoes when you try some of these 10 easy tricks for How To make Shoes More Comfortable!
How to Feel Comfortable in Skirts
- Always wear a slip… and consider Satin Bloomer Slips to avoid any chance of your legs rubbing together.
Best Tips for How to Make Earrings Not Hurt Your Ears
- Opt for Nickle-Free Earrings, and if you have a favorite pair of earrings that irritates your skin… you may want to consider applying a little vaseline to the posts before wearing them to help protect your ears from irritation.
#11: Take Better Care of Your Clothes
The better you take care of your clothes, the better they’ll look and the longer they will last!
Simple ways to make sure you’re taking the best care of your clothes might be…
- Hand washing certain items
- Using the delicate cycle on your washing machine
- Always place delicate items in special delicate laundry bags when washing in the machine
- Hang drying certain items
- Making sure you’re using the right type of hangers… for example, rather than thin wire hangers, I keep all of my sweaters on thick padded hangers so the shoulders don’t get stretched out.
Delicate Laundry Bags
#12: Pay Attention to Those Details!
- Iron your wrinkled clothes, or use a Hand Held Steamer.
- Use a Sweater Shaver to remove pilling, bobbles, and fuzzballs.
- Use a lint roller to remove pet hair. {I had a snuggly Black & White border collie whose black hair attached to my light clothes and whose white hair was a magnet to my black clothes. Lint rollers at home + a portable lint roller for my purse was a lifesaver!}

#13: Always Accessorize
A delicate necklace, pretty bracelet, classy hoop earrings, or sparkly ring can add that classy vibe to any outfit. And you’ll love this simple trick for How to Organize Your Jewelry!
And don’t forget your hair. Pretty hair clips can add class and style to any outfit!
When it comes to jewelry and accessories… sleek, elegant and dainty touches are always in style. And make sure to clean your rings so they sparkle!
How to Clean Your Diamond Ring
Don’t forget some pretty sunglasses and a cute purse or stylish bag! I like to check the clearance racks at Nordstrom Rack for exceptional deals on high quality leather purses and leather belts.
I used to work the Nordstrom Sales when I was in college in Seattle, and have always loved their high quality items and designer brands. But paying full price at Nordstrom’s is something I’ll just never do.
At Nordstrom Rack, I recently snatched up an adorable Kate Spade leather bag there for around 70% off and a cute leather belt for 90% off. Plus… knowing that they’re both genuine leather {as opposed to bonded}, I know they’ll stand the test of time!
Most importantly, just remember… confidence is the best accessory you’ll ever have! Good posture always looks lovely… and a smile is the prettiest thing you’ll ever wear! 🙂
#14: Don’t Forget the Perfume!
Even just a small spritz of your favorite fragrance can boost your mood and confidence… making you feel classier right away! If you have a signature scent you love to wear, you might be able to save BIG on the cost per ounce by opting for the larger bottle.
To save even more… I love to pick up my favorite designer fragrances on major markdowns at Marshalls and TJ Maxx!
If you spray directly on your skin, consider spraying on your wrists, behind your ears, on your inner elbow, and behind your knees. If you prefer to just spray on your clothes, you can spray into the air and walk through it, or just spritz on the front of your shirt.
Another fun tip is to spray a little perfume on your hair brush, and every time you brush your hair you’ll add a sweet little subtle scent!
