  1. Glori Johnson says:

I have made a different version of this for many years now, and it is an all time favorite. I have always used chicken broth instead of the beef broth and still use the ground beef. I also put two cans of corn in it, one yellow and one white corn. I use pinto beans instead of kidney beans, I only use the can of Rotel and not the can of diced tomatoes. I don’t use the garlic salt or salt. With all the can ingredients I don’t drain any of them, it helps having the extra liquid and gives the soup more flavor. When I got the recipe many years ago from a co-worker she used pinto beans and kidney beans, and instead of the white corn she put in hominy. I really don’t care for kidney beans or hominy so that is why I switched it up with the black beans and white corn. There are many possibilities of changing this wonderful soup to your taste, it’s just so versatile.

    1. Heidi says:

That sounds like a delicious version as well, Glori! Thanks so much for sharing! 🙂

  2. Alyssa says:

Does this freeze well? And if so, how long is it good for in the freezer?

    1. Heidi says:

Hi Alyssa ~ I haven’t personally tried freezing this one, but here’s what one reader who made it said: “It was great! I dumped all the ingredients into a gallon freezer bag, then thawed it the night before I put it in the crockpot. I turned the crockpot on low and when I got home 10 hours later it was ready!” Hope that helps!

  3. Jennifer says:

I made this and loved it!! I just bought the ingredients to make it again and want to double it.. Do I have to adjust the cook time and I have a 6 quart crock, will it fit??

    1. Heidi Miller says:

If doubling, I would recommend using a 7 – 8 quart crockpot. Then, you’ll want to add on at least 20 – 30 minutes to the cook time. Just keep an eye on it to determine when it’s hot and ready.

  4. Christina says:

I want to make this but with chicken ..should I change the beef broth with chicken broth ?

  5. Roberta says:

Looking forward to trying this! Quick question – has anyone ever done this with ground turkey? Any input? Thanks for sharing!

    1. Heidi says:

Hi Roberta ~ I haven’t tried it yet with Ground Turkey, but it should work just as well. If you try it, let us know how it turns out!

      1. Kris says:

I have used ground turkey and it is great!

        1. Heidi Miller says:

          I’m glad to hear that!

    2. Cren says:

Have you used it with ground turkey instead? Just wondering how it tasted! I’m sure ground beef is delicious but I have a wedding coming up I gotta get ready for 🙂

      1. Heidi Miller says:

You can definitely substitute ground turkey for the beef in this recipe.

  6. Angel says:

I made the taco soup last night. It was really good. My husband said it reminded him of chili. Either way it was yummy, yummy, yummy. Thank you for posting such easy recipes. Tonight we are going to try the orange chicken. I’m pretty excited

    1. Heidi says:

It does have some similarities to chili… I love how thick and hearty it is. So glad you both liked it and are enjoying the easy recipes, Angel! 🙂

  7. Jayne says:

My boyfriend made this for us the other night. He substituted the beef with chicken breast. He marinated the chicken in taco seasoning and used chicken broth instead of beef. Absolutely delicious!

    1. Heidi says:

I make a similar version with chicken, too… SO delicious! So glad you liked it, Jayne!

  8. Christine says:

I made this soup a few days ago as an alternative to my usual vegetables soup. My husband and I loved it! The only adjustment I made was to sauté one medium diced onion instead of using onion powder. Perfect for a cold day. Thanks for the recipe.

    1. Heidi says:

So glad you both loved it, Christine! Yes… it’s super delicious with sauteed onions, too!

  9. Antonia says:

Just finished putting everything in the crock pot. Patiently waiting for a delicious lunch on a 28° chilly day. Thanks for the recipe!

    1. Heidi says:

Aww ~ you’re very welcome, Antonia… nothing beats a yummy, hot soup on a chilly day! ENJOY! 🙂

  10. Tara Leigh says:

How many servings does this recipe make? I just received a new crock pot for Christmas, but it is a small one (4 quart) and I’m cooking for only one or two. Please respond, I’m at the very least the third person to ask this question, and I really want to try this.

    1. Heidi says:

Hi Tara ~ this makes a big batch and serves approx. 8 – 10. I typically cook in my 5.5 quart or 7 quart Crock Pot, due to the size of the recipe. Hope that helps! 🙂

      1. Krislyn says:

        Hello Heidi!

If I am doubling the recipe, should I cook this longer? I’ve made this many times and everyone LOVES IT! ❤️

        -Krislyn

        1. Heidi says:

Hi Krislyn ~ I’m so glad to hear you all love the Taco Soup! If doubling the recipe, you’ll definitely want to extend the cook time. Just keep an eye on it, and stir occasionally so that big batch heats up evenly. When the entire batch is evenly heated and all hot, it’s ready to serve! 🙂

      2. anne says:

How can I adjust the taco soup to my 4 qt crockpot? i bought everything, it looks great!

        1. Heidi says:

Hi Anne… I would suggest cutting the recipe in half to make sure it fits easily in your 4 quart crockpot. Hope that helps! 🙂
