I’ve always been a fan of fruit smoothies. However, I kept hearing about Green Smoothie Recipes ~ what?!?
Why would someone put spinach in their smoothies?
I know veggies are essential and spinach has been called a superfood, but honestly… not in my smoothie!
Curiosity got the best of me though, and I now must say I’m hooked on Green Smoothies!
Green Smoothie Recipes
{with our little secret… Spinach!}
When experimenting with a “recipe” I had an amazing discovery… I couldn’t taste the spinach!
So why wouldn’t I add this tremendously healthy green into my smoothie? Oh, and as long as you add some pretty colored fruit {especially blueberries ~ also another superfood}, it won’t turn out green either!
What You’ll Need:
- 1 Handful Fresh Spinach
- 2 Cups Orange Juice
- 2 Cups Milk {I use non-fat}
- 1 Banana
- 8 Frozen Strawberries
- 1/2 Cup Blueberries {I use frozen}
- 8 oz. Yogurt {I like Boysenberry or Blackberry}
- Optional: 1 tsp. Sugar
What You’ll Do:
- Blend spinach, orange juice and milk together first. I use the ‘liquify’ option on my blender.
- Once the spinach has blended well, add all other ingredients and blend.
- If using fresh fruit, you can add in some ice cubes for more of a frozen consistency.
- Enjoy!
- If making these for someone else, you may want to wait until they’ve had it and raved about how much they enjoy it… before you share the secret with them… that they’re drinking spinach!
This is a great way to pack some fruit & veggie servings into your day. You may also find another bonus is a little boost of energy! Optional add-ins could include ground flax, protein powder, unflavored fiber powder, etc.
Have you tried a Green Smoothie yet? What are some of your favorite things to add into your smoothies? Leave a comment – I’d love to hear!!

I haven’t tried green smoothies. My kids LOVE smoothies and we have them almost every morning with breakfast. My kids actually love spinach and I add it to anything I can. I think I’ll sneak some in to their smoothies in the morning and see if they notice. I have a feeling they might not drink it as readily knowing veggies are in there, even if they enough said veggie. Thanks for the recipe and recommedation!
This is totally like the Green Machine juice from Naked!
Thanks so much for showing me that it doesn’t have to be green!
It looks and sounds great!
Love your blog!

Really does sound good and healthy.
Wow thanks! I can’t wait to try it! I’ll have to go get a couple of the ingredients but it will be worth the trip. We love smoothies around here!
I’m so glad you posted this. I just got a Vita Mix 2 weeks ago and I have been wanting to make a smoothie out of greens.
I love doing green smoothies. I make them with milk, yogurt, whatever fruit, flavoring, sweetener, wheat bran, and egg white.
We love spinach or kale in our smoothies. I also buy bananas or clearance and throw them in the freezer for cheap fruit and it just adds more nutrients and fiber for our morning. I also will add some of our non-sweetened applesauce we canned last year and our own juice that we canned too. It’s become my hubby’s favorite breakfast.
I am not much of a spinach eater but maybe I will change my mind if I try this sounds healthy.
I love lots of smoothies and have a great strawberry banana one.
My husband didn’t want any part of “green” in his smoothie when I first mentioned them. He was fine when he discovered that you couldn’t taste the spinach. He prefers them to not be too green, though. We like banana(helps to sweeten), strawberries, pineapple and plain yogurt. I usually add a bit of raw honey for sweetener and sometimes a dash of vanilla. Yum!
Toot Toot!!
I’m going to have to try this out. Sounds gross BUT doesn’t hurt to try especially since I’ve been experimenting smoothie flavors this week with my new blender…

I was just as skeptical as you, but about a month ago I tried it out and I’m hooked too!
My fav smoothie is:
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
1/2 banana
5 strawberries
1/4 cup milk
1/4 cup vanilla yogurt
1 Tbsp ground flax seed
a couple of hand fulls of spinach
That’s not a green smoothie! THIS is a green smoothie! (wink)

I use 5-6 BIG handfuls of spinach (kale, collards, etc) in my smoothies and YOU STILL CAN’T TASTE IT. It does make it more green (clearly), but if you use other light colored fruits like green grapes, pineapple, granny smith apples, peaches, bananas, etc, you end up with a really BRIGHT, fresh, green color. Add even a little red (berries) and you get BROWN. Not so appetizing.
My husband, at first SUPER reluctant to drink them, now whines if I don’t make his smoothie EVERY. DAY.
I would end up with a brown smoothie! I love them though I don’t know if I could drink a brown one.
Saving the recipe to try. Thanks
Heck yes! I love green smoothies

Cheers to Green Smoothies and all of the energy they give us!

I have just tried a recipe that a friend told me.
It’s just apple juice, frozen spinach, and frozen berries. Super simple and easy to make.
The kids and I made these the other day for the first time. The oldest (almost 3) and I enjoyed them, but the youngest (almost 2) not so much. You could taste the spinach at all!
My freezer is always stocked with Spinach!! My kids love it. My pickiest eater has NO CLUE! Love green smoothies. Blueberries are the best at hiding the green. BUT…I have even resorted to calling the green smoothies Monster Smoothies (you know…monsters are green right?) and my 6 year old boy LOVES that!
I absolutely LOVE this idea…. I used to drink the SuperFood smoothie from Odwalla…. till I found out I was a celiac (they use wheat and other no-no grains). I am so excited to try this out and get my morning green back!
Tried my 1st Green Smoothie this week and loved it! Thanks for sharing your recipe.
You're very welcome, Rooster Chick… I'm glad you liked them!
We have Green Smoothies about 5 times per week, and love them!
They are great source of energy, and a fabulous way to sneak some spinach into the diet!

Thanks for the recipe. I just tried it and I love it. My husband drank it all and then I told him it had spinach he was very surprised. I can't wait for the boys to try it when they get home from school.

OMG, I can’t wait to try this! I just bought a Ninja (found on an infomercial but bought from Target) and this thing is too cool for the price. I’m picky and so are my kids so wish me luck! May even get real ambitious and try Amy’s (Muddy Boot Blog) green smoothie. Thanks for posting it!!

My green dish for March was a sea vegetation drink. I mix greens (powdered) with decaf pomegrante tea, add cinnamon and brown sugar for antioxadants, and stir it up. It gives an energy boost, and taste good.
I am already a subscriber.
I enjoy zucchini more than nay other vegetable, especially in tomato sauce.
I have 3 young kids and I can never get them to eat spinach………this looks like a great sneaky way to try…thanks
LOVE Green Smoothies!
I drink green smoothies every day sometimes 3 or 4 times a day.
