How to Keep Lettuce Fresh
Would you like to keep your lettuce fresh and crisp for longer than ever?
Here’s what you need to do…
How to Keep Head Lettuce Fresh:
When you get home from the grocery store, remove any wilted or slimy leaves from your head of lettuce, and toss or add to your Compost Bin.
Do NOT wash lettuce head.
Then place head of lettuce in your refrigerator’s crisper drawer with paper towels underneath it.
This will help to absorb any excess moisture, and keep it fresh so much longer.
How to Keep Lettuce Leaves Fresh in the Fridge:
Wash lettuce leaves, remove any wilted leaves, and dry completely. Â Make sure it has been thoroughly dried before moving on to the next step…. a Salad Spinner works great for this step!
Wrap your dry lettuce up in a white paper towel.
Transfer paper towel wrapped lettuce leaves to a large gallon sized ziploc bag. Â Zip mostly closed, but leave the corner {about 25% or so} of the bag unzipped to allow for some airflow.
Place the bag in your crisper drawer of the refrigerator, and replace towels as necessary if they become damp.
This method works well with all types of salad greens.
The paper towels help to absorb unwanted moisture that can cause your leafy greens to wilt faster.
The plastic bag then helps to keep out unwanted air.
Seriously… wasn’t that super easy!?!
What Your Frugal Friends Are Saying…
Shelly writes: “This trick really works, try it! Â It makes lettuce leaves last twice as long as usual!”
Suzanne writes: “I keep paper towels with mine to keep moisture out.”
Jeryl writes: “I use the wax paper bags from cereal or cheeze-its or whatever instead of zip lock bags & I bought white cloth dish towels for this use. Â Works like a charm. Nothing to throw away. Just wash & REUSE!”

How to Avoid Ice Cream Freezer Burn
Are you wondering how to stop Ice Cream freezer burn? Â Well guess what… it’s so much easier than you think! Â This little trick works like a charm!
Why Does Ice Cream Get Freezer Burn?
Air is a major cause of ice cream freezer burn, so to keep those icky frozen fuzzy ice crystals away, you’ll want to minimize the amount of air that can get to your ice cream.
How Long Does it Take Ice Cream to Get Freezer Burn?
Ice cream freezer burn can seem to come on suddenly, but it actually usually takes about 2 months or more for it to start forming.
How to Prevent Ice Cream Freezer Burn…
So how do you keep ice cream fresh in the freezer? Â Well, to stop ice cream from getting freezer burn, you’ll start with some plastic food wrap.
After you dish out your Ice Cream… just place a small piece of plastic wrap right on top of the ice cream.
Push down to flatten it against the ice cream… then put the lid back on before you pop it back into the freezer.
This will create a protective barrier and help prevent as much air from getting into your ice cream.
When you’re ready to dish out some more Ice Cream, just peel back the saran wrap… dish it up, then cover it back up with the saran wrap and lid.
This really is such an easy fix for preventing ice cream freezer burn, and ultimately the best way to store ice cream in the freezer.
Melissa writes: “We do this, too! It really does work!”
Pam writes: “I use wax paper, it works too.”
Sandra writes: “I do this…then I put the ice cream in a plastic grocery store bag and wrap it around the carton before placing in the freezer. It gives the ice cream extra protection.”
Where to Store Ice Cream in the Freezer:
Another important factor of keeping your ice cream fresh longer, has to do with WHERE your ice cream is being stored. Â This change can make such a difference in keeping your favorite creamy, dreamy dessert in the best condition!
1: Chest Freezer: Â Opt for an old fashioned chest freezer or upright freezer if you have one. Â You know… the kind that has the frost build up over time.
2: Frost-Free Freezer: Â If you only have a newer frost-free style freezer, make sure to store your ice cream in the BACK of the freezer, as far away from the door as possible. Â This little trick can make a big difference in keeping it cooler!
3: NEVER store in a Freezer Door. Â That is a warmer spot you’ll want to avoid.
