#3: Use Every Inch of Your Wall Space!
One of the easiest ways to declutter your garage quickly is with a garage organization rail system. This is a great way to make better use of your wall space and to get all of those large garden tools organized and easily accessible at the same time. Plus, a rail system like this Rubbermaid Fasttrack Rail Kit is usually fairly easy to install. You can use this wall organizer for organizing your:
- Shovels
- Rakes
- Large Brooms
- Pruners
- Loppers
- Cordless Shrub Trimmers
- Pole Trimmers
- Garden Hoses
- Power Cords
- Garage Hand Tools
Rail systems also give you the added flexibility to change or update your garage storage layout anytime you want.
You can even create a wall mounted fishing rod organizer to store your long fishing rods!
#4: Try These Small Garage Cabinet Ideas…
If you don’t have a lot of space available in your garage, maximizing your wall space for storage is a must. We made use of an unused corner of our garage to hang the cabinet pictured.
When deciding which garage cabinet will work best for you, pay attention to reviews to verify the quality of the cabinet. Also look for cabinets that included the mounting hardware for no additional price. I personally like to have a few cabinets that have a lock, so we can better secure more valuable items in the garage… Or keep chemicals locked away from the kiddos.
Once you’ve identified a few wall cabinet options that will work for you… be sure to wait for a sale! I scored 50% off our Husky Wall Cabinets (Home Depot brand) that included all of the necessary hardware to mount the cabinets to my garage wall. The cabinets also included the locks we wanted.
You can use Free Home Depot Gift Cards or you can also use Free Lowe’s Gift Card to save money when purchasing shelving, wall cabinets, and rail organizers to maximize your garage wall storage.
#5: Then Add Some Garage Ceiling Storage Racks!
Don’t let that ceiling space go to waste… especially if you have tall ceilings in your garage! Garage ceiling racks are such a cost effective and budget friendly way to get organized fast and remove that clutter from your garage floor! Check out the Fleximount Overhead Garage Storage Rack for a simple and efficient way to save space!
#6: Go Vertical on the Wall With Garage Storage Racks
Using sturdy metal storage racks will provide you with one of the most flexible storage solutions available. Plus, metal storage racks can be unloaded and relocated if you want to “redecorate” or rearrange your garage. They are also fairly easy to assemble and don’t require any special tools.
Waiting for a deal on metal storage racks is a must, as these frequently go on sale throughout the year.
#7: Implement the Ultimate Flexible Garage Storage Solution: Storage Bins!
Storage bins are the ultimate flexible storage solution. They can be used with metal storage racks, garage ceiling storage racks, garage wall shelving, or simply stacked on top of each other. Plus, storage bins can be used and reused for years to come.
#8: Don’t Forget to Add Labels To Your Storage Bins
Take the mystery out of “what’s in that bin” when you add detailed labels to each of your garage storage bins!
You can get as fancy as using printed labels you make yourself, or keep it easy with peel and stick vinyl letters…
Large Vinyl Letter Stickers
#9: Put These 5 Gallon Bucket Storage Ideas to Use…
5 gallon buckets are easy to find and fairly inexpensive. You can pick some up at your local Home Depot, Lowe’s, Tractor Supply and even Walmart!
I personally have a collection of 5 gallon buckets from both Lowe’s (blue in color) and Tractor Supply (both red and white). These 5 gallon buckets really come in handy when doing yard work, but they’re also really useful in the garage. They can easily be hung from the wall using a hook, or attached to a rail system like the Rubbermaid Fasttrack Rail Kit.
These are some of my favorite things to store in 5 gallon buckets:
- Balls
- Pool Noodles
- Scrap Pieces of Wood
#10: Bike Storage Ideas For A Small Garage – Go Vertical and Hang From the Wall!
Bikes take up a LOT of floor space in your garage, so using your walls and ceiling space for bike storage is a must!
One of the least expensive ways to store your bikes, is to hang them from a wall vertically using large hooks fastened to wall studs.
To avoid having to lift your bike onto a hook high on the wall, one alternative is to install a Bike Storage Pulley System in your garage instead.
#11: DIY In A Tight Space With This Small Garage Workbench Idea! {It’s Collapsible}
If you don’t have space available in your garage for a traditional workbench, consider installing a collapsible workbench that can be put down and out of the way when not in use.
In my garage, we installed a folding workbench that provided a much needed workspace. The best part is that when it’s folded away, we can still fit a car in the garage!
#12: DIY Anywhere With a DIY Mobile Workbench!
Now if you don’t have enough space in your garage for a permanent workbench, consider creating a simple DIY mobile workbench instead.
What You’ll Need to make your own compact DIY Mobile Workbench:
- A pair of high weight capacity saw horses, that are also collapsible. {like the Bora Portamate Speedhorse or Kreg Track Horse}
- 3/4 inch thick Sheet of Plywood. {I like to use 2 smaller sheets that are 2′ x 4′ each, as these are much easier to move and lift.}
- Optional 2 x 4 Boards for added support. {These can be used with a Bora Portamate Speedhorse style saw horse, and will give your plywood work surface additional support.}
- The collapsible saw horses and small sheets of plywood are compact and can easily be stored on a shelf when not being used.
This temporary or portable workbench can easily be assembled and disassembled, providing you with a workspace whenever you need it.
I even use my portable workbench for potting plants in my backyard garden!

#13: Start Organizing Tools with a Mobile Toolbox on Wheels…
A larger tool chest with slide out drawers is one of the best ways to organize tools. But when you only have a small amount of space in your garage, getting a toolbox with a workbench top can help make your space really count!
We’ve been using a mobile toolbox with a wood workbench top in our garage for years. Both my hubby and I love it. It’s so handy!
#14: The Best Way to Organize Screwdrivers!
The best way to organize and store screwdrivers in your garage is with a screwdriver wall organizer or a screwdriver cabinet organizer.
A tool organizer for your screwdrivers will help you find your tools faster, and an organizer will also help you avoid misplacing and losing your screwdrivers.
My hubby found this inexpensive organizer to hang in a garage wall cabinet at Harbor Freight for just a few dollars.
#15: Learn How To Organize Hardware and Small Parts…
Finding a good way to organize hardware and small parts can really be tricky.
For years we used a hardware organizer with little drawers than hung on the wall. But it was always hard to remember what was in all of those little drawers. Plus my garage had poor lighting, so you couldn’t see what was in the drawers without pulling each one out to look inside.
We recently started using a Stanley Small Parts Organizer with removable bins. The Stanley Small Parts Organizers are reasonably sturdy and they stack well on shelves or in garage cabinets. Plus, the bright yellow colored removable storage bins make it so much easier to see what I am looking for.
