So have you been wondering How to Dry Dill? It’s actually SO easy!

There’s nothing more delicious than homegrown, fresh herbs… and I love growing fresh dill out in my garden.

One of the best parts about growing your herbs is being able to preserve your harvest now, and enjoying it when cooking all year long!

Dill is easy to grow when the weather is between 50 – 80 degrees, so toss some seeds in the ground and give it a try this year!

If you use this herb drying tip with the dill you grow at home… you’ll even end up with organic dried dill!

How nice is that?!?

Plus, when you dry your dill at home, it can retain more of the natural, vibrant color… making it so much prettier than store bought dried dill!

Can You Air Dry Fresh Dill?

You sure can!

Dill dries wonderfully when hung upside down.

Depending on the humidity in your air, you should have perfect, naturally dried dill in about 2 – 3 weeks.

I like to hang mine by small bunches, upside down from a clothespin when drying.

It works like a charm!

How Do You Dehydrate Dill Without a Dehydrator?

In addition to the air dry method mentioned above, another quick and easy way to dry your dill is with a microwave.

What is the Best Way to Preserve Fresh Dill?

If you have the time, I would opt for air drying… but if you need your dried dill in a hurry, you can have it done in about 2 minutes using the microwave.

How Do I Convert Fresh Dill to Dried Dill?

Once you have dried your dill, you can use it in any recipe calling for dried dill.

If using it in a recipe calling for fresh dill, just use this simple conversion…

1 Tsp. Dried Dill = 1 Tbsp. Fresh Dill.

How to Store Dried Dill

Once you have dried your dill, you’ll want to transfer it to a small glass spice jar or mini mason jar, and store in a dark, dry, cool cupboard.

How Long Does Dried Dill Last?

For maximum flavor, dried dill works best when used within 1 year.

How to Dry Dill – Supplies Needed

You’ll just need a few basic supplies to dry your dill.

You likely already have all of these items laying around your home somewhere…

  • Fresh Dill Stalks
  • Rubber Band or Clothespin (Clothes Peg)
  • OR Glass or Ceramic Microwaveable Plate + Microwave-Safe Paper Towels

That’s it.  So simple.

If you don’t have any of these items, you can easily pick them up next time you are out and about.

How to Air Dry Dill

So are you ready? Here’s what you’ll do…

1. Begin with clean, dry dill.

2. Take a bundle of stalks and turn them upside down.

3. Using a rubber band or clothes pin, affix them somewhere in your home where they can slowly hang dry upside down.

4. Depending on the humidity in your air, you should have perfect, naturally dried dill in about 2 – 3 weeks.

5. Once dill is completely dry, simply run your thumb and forefinger along each stem and branch to remove the dried leaves.

5. Discard the stem and branches, and transfer leaves to a small glass spice jar or mini mason jar, and store in a cool, dry, dark cupboard.

How to Dry Dill in the Microwave

It takes just a few simple steps and literally a few seconds of your time to dry your fresh dill in the microwave.

Here’s what you’ll do…

1. Begin with clean, dry dill.

2. Cut off the stems.

3. Place 1 paper towel flat on your plate.

4. Lay out Dill branches in a single layer on the paper towel.

5. Place another paper towel on top.

6. Microwave 20 seconds, then in 15 second increments until dill has dried completely. Mine usually takes anywhere between 1 minute 20 seconds to just over 2 minutes.

Total drying time will depend on how damp your dill was to start with, how humid your climate is, and how much dill you had on your plate.

7. Once the dill is completely dry, simply run your thumb and forefinger along each stem and branch to remove the dried leaves.

8. Discard the stem and branches, and transfer leaves to a small glass spice jar or mini mason jar, and store in a cool, dry, dark cupboard.
