Jennifer writes: “If you’ll check farmer’s markets, they often have plant seedlings available closer to the end of the starting season (around May) You can get these for just pennies.”

Karen writes: “A great way to get inexpensive plants is at a gardening club sale in your town. The members start the plants by seed or divide their plants (perennials).  I’ve gotten tomato plants for $0.10 each this way.”

Rebecca writes: “Buy perennials! You can divide and start new plants from the few that you buy”

Mason Jar Herb Garden

Plants in jars labeled basil, parsley, and rosemary.

Surprise a gardener with this cute DIY Mason Jar Herb Garden!

Here’s what you’ll need…

How to Make a Mason Jar Herb Garden…

Place a layer of small rocks in the bottom of each jar.  This will allow for proper drainage when watering.

Fill each jar with high quality potting soil.

Check your local home improvement garden center or the grocery store for small herb plants.

When planting the plants, you may want to consider splitting them up into multiple jars, allowing plenty of space for the roots and plant to expand.

For example, I have taken basil plants from the store and gently pulled to split them into multiple smaller plants.

Let your gift recipient know to place their herbs in a bright, well lit spot or windowsill in their home, and water regularly.  Mine live near my south facing windows.

DIY Wildflower Seed Bom*s

Amber writes: “Love this idea. Have many gardeners on my list as well. Will be making these for Christmas gifts.”

Fingerprint Flower Pot

Plant inside terra cotta pot with fingerprint artwork on it.

Turn any terra cotta pot into a work of art when you make this fun Fingerprint Flower Pot Craft with the kids!

This sweet Child-Made Fingerprint Flower Pot Craft is so simple to make, and makes an adorable keepsake!

Not only will your terra cotta pot become a sweet memory you’ll cherish, you can make a second one to give away to Grandma and Grandpa, too!

Kids have a way of growing up SO fast, don’t they? That’s why I’ve always loved precious fingerprint and handprint crafts.

These are such a fun memory to remember your child’s sweet little itty-bitty fingers!

You’ll just need to round up a few simple supplies before you get started…

  • Unglazed Terra Cotta Clay Pot (around $1 at Home Depot & Lowe’s)
  • Red, Yellow, and Black Acrylic Craft Paints
  • Fine Black Sharpie Marker

Here’s what you’ll do…

Transfer a little bit of each color of paint to a paper plate.

For the ladybug, dip your child’s thumb in the red paint, dab a bit off so it’s not too much paint, and help them press onto the pot, carefully lifting it away.

After the paint has dried completely, use a sharpie marker to add legs, dots, lines, etc.

For the flowers, dip your child’s middle finger into the black paint, dab a bit off so it’s not too much paint, and help them create a center dot for the flower.

After the black dot has dried completely, dip your child’s pointer finger in the yellow paint, dab a bit off so it’s not too much paint, and help them create petals around the center black dot.

Reapply yellow paint as necessary.

Continue the process, adding as many ladybugs and flower as you would like.

Once the pot has dried completely, add some potting mix, a cute flower or houseplant, and ENJOY your child’s sweet little work of art!

My sweet little man made this for me in when he was six, and I just LOVE it!  I know you’ll cherish the ones your littles make, too!
