How to Get a Ring Off a Swollen Finger

There’s no worse feeling than having a ring stuck on your finger, am I right?

That’s why I’m so excited to share these easy tricks for How to Get a Ring Off a Swollen Finger!

They really do work like a charm!

Now when it comes to rings stuck on fingers, let’s just say I know the feeling!

Living in Arizona, where Summer temps can soar up to 110+ degrees, my fingers have a way of swelling on those scorching hot days.

So after trial and error, I’ve found my favorite tricks to help those tight rings slide right off!

Are you ready?

Here are my favorite tricks for How to Get a Ring Off that is Stuck…

How to Reduce Swelling In Your Hands to Get a Ring Off

Red bowl of ice water.

Have you ever noticed how loose your rings get when you’re cold?

My ring can go from completely stuck when my hands are hot and swollen, to falling upside down just depending how hot or cold I am. And that happens almost every day in an Arizona Summer… going from a long outside walk to inside frigid air conditioning! 🙂

So let’s put that same concept to use. Our first step for stuck rings is to chill your hand.

This can help reduce swelling and shrink those fingers down a bit, making it that much easier to remove a tight ring.

Try soaking your hand in ice water for at least 5 minutes, then hold your hand over your head for a few minutes after that to elevate it.

Or… you can try wrapping your finger in ice, and elevating your hand over your head for 5 – 10 minutes as well.

The key here is to reduce swelling by cooling down your fingers and elevating your hand.

How to Remove a Stuck Ring with Oil or Dish Soap

Containers of olive oil and Dawn dish soap.

Now that your fingers have chilled out… it’s time to make your ring finger slippery!

Rings have a way of sliding off a lot easier with a little help from oil or dish soap.

So let’s head on over to your kitchen cupboards or pantry.

It’s time to apply some oil to your finger.

Do you have any Olive Oil or Avocado Oil on hand? These both work like a charm!

Or alternatively, you can apply a few drops of Dish Soap to your finger.

Now rub the oil or dish soap all around the largest part of your finger, and where the ring is stuck.

At this point, you can try wiggling the ring back and forth to see if it’s ready to slide off.

So did it work?

If not, then continue with the next step below…

How to Get Your Ring Off with String

Did you know you can wind your ring off with curling ribbon? It’s true!

So your finger has chilled out, and the oil or dish soap has been applied?

Here’s a trick for how to get a ring off a swollen finger with string!

Take a pice of curling ribbon (about 12 – 14″ long), and thread it underneath your ring.

Then wrap it around your finger in a spiral fashion until you reach halfway between your knuckle and your fingernail, about 4 times. It doesn’t need to be wrapped tight.

Now grab the end of the ribbon under your ring, and slowly wind it around and around, the same direction that you wrapped your spiral.

You’ll notice that it gradually will push your ring up and over your knuckle, as it unwinds.

Resize a Ring Larger

No luck? Try this…

The methods above have been extraordinarily effective for me again and again, so I’m hoping they’ll help you get that stubborn ring off your finger.

However, if none of the methods above worked, as a last resort you can always consider having the ring cut off and resized by a jeweler.

Finger sizes can change, and that’s okay!

If all else fails, simply head to your local jeweler.

If it’s just too tight to get off, your jeweler should actually be able to cut it off. Then you can request they resize your ring for you.

Jewelers can actually make many rings bigger for you… either by stretching them or adding more metal.

I had a ring resized after my first baby was born, and it was definitely worth it.

It felt luxurious when I got it back! 🙂
