Tips from Your Frugal Friends for Homemade Baby Food
Paulette said: “I found it was so much more cost efficient to make my own. Plus, I knew there was no additives, just wholesome goodness. I mashed up large quantities of a single fruit or vegetable and froze. No spices or sugars added, let the palate learn the natural taste. One new food per week so could check for allergies.”
Heidi said: “I made food for both of my boys… never bought baby food.”
Kathy said: “If there weren’t many spices in the food, I mashed up and feed them what we ate.”

Homemade Baby Food Peas Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 lbs. Frozen Sweet Peas (32 oz.)
- 3 1/4 cups Water
Instructions
- Place frozen peas in the bottom of Instant Pot, and pour 1 1/2 cups water over peas.
- Select Pressure Cook, Low, and change time to 3 minutes.
- Preheating will begin 10 seconds after settings are selected.
- Once peas are done, do a quick release for the pressure. (I like to do a gradual quick release to avoid any messy splatters... basically a quick release of steam in a few gradual nudges.)
- Now transfer cooked peas to your blender, and discard any excess liquid in the instant pot.
- Pour remaining 1 3/4 cup water over peas in blender, and blend or pulse (stirring as necessary), until you reach your desired consistency. For an even smoother puree, simply add more water 1 tbsp. at a time.
- Transfer Green Pea Puree to OXO Tot Baby Blocks, pop on the lids, and store in Refrigerator or Freezer.
- When baby is ready to eat, pull one out at a time and allow it to come to room temperature prior to feeding Baby.
Notes
- It will take around 15 minutes for your Instant Pot to initially reach pressure before cooking begins.
- In the refrigerator, store up to 3 days.
- In the freezer, store up to 3 months.

Great recipe during these times when we need to be frugal. We used to make all of our own baby food from scratch too. We used to freeze the pureed baby food in ice cube trays and then place them in baggies in the freezer. You can take out a cube and a time or so and just heat it up in the microwave. Your pea recipe reminds us of the boys when they were little, so fun but crazy busy.
Heidi says
That’s such a great idea! The baby years are such a fun time, and you’re right… definitely crazy busy! 🙂
