Before you make your Butternut Squash Baby Food, here are some frequently asked questions…

Do You Really Need a Baby Food Maker?

Nope… you actually don’t!  Though they can be nice to have on hand, they’re really not necessary at all!  You can make all sorts of purees for baby just by using a blender, and as baby ages you can mash up food with your potato masher!

Here’s what your frugal friends are saying about making their own baby food…

Heidi said:  “I made food for both of my boys… never bought baby food.”

Kathy said: “If there weren’t many spices in the food, I mashed up and fed them what we ate.”

Paulette said: “I found it was so much more cost efficient to make my own. Plus, I knew there was no additives, just wholesome goodness. I mashed up large quantities of a single fruit or vegetable and froze. No spices or sugars added, just let the palate learn the natural taste.  I tried out one new food per week so I could check for allergies.”

Can I Feed My Baby Butternut Squash?

So are you wondering… what vegetables should I start my baby on?  In addition to Sweet Potato Baby Food, Butternut Squash Baby Food is a very common stage 1 baby food you’ll find at the grocery stores.  Once my boys were ready for solids {around 4 – 6 months old}, this was one of the first foods they started on.  And they LOVED the sweet taste!

Can You Steam Butternut Squash For Baby Food?

You sure can!  That’s basically what we’ll be doing with this recipe!  You’ll just cut your squash in half lengthwise, add some water to a 9×13 casserole dish or cake pan, place your squash in the dish face side down, cover with foil, and let it steam in the oven!

What Is the Best Blender for Making Baby Food?

You’ll want to make sure you have a powerful blender on hand once you start making baby food.  The key is a strong motor that will blend well and break down any remaining chunks in the food.  When it comes to blenders for baby food, my top pick is a Vitamix.  They’re a bit pricey, but let me tell you… they’re amazing!  I’ve had mine almost 10 years now, and it still runs great!  They also have amazing customer service and a stellar warranty.

How Do You Preserve Baby Food in Jars?

Once you make your homemade baby food, you’ll portion it out into small baby sized portions.  Then… you’ll simply place what you’re not going to use right away in the freezer.  Once you transfer your baby food to the freezer, just make sure to use it up within 3 months.

How Do You Store Homemade Baby Food?

When it comes to storing homemade butternut squash baby food, these  OXO Tot Baby Blocks are the best!  They’re perfectly made for tiny portions, freezer-friendly, and SO nice for storing Baby’s food!  They’ve even got a leak-proof seal, are stackable, and are great for portioning with measurements right on each container.

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  • Poke squash with fork approx. 10 times in various spots around the outside, then microwave for 1 minute.
  • Cut squash lengthwise with sharp knife on a cutting board. {it will be a bit softer and easier to cut after microwaving}
  • Scoop out seeds and stringy flesh from each side with large spoon.
  • Fill 9×13 Baking Dish with 3/4 cup Water, place each side of squash face down in dish, then cover dish with foil.
  • Bake for approx. 45 minutes, or until soft.

If storing in the freezer, use within 3 months.
*Water amount will vary depending on how large your squash is and the consistency you want for Baby… just make sure it’s not too thick

Thank you so much for the recipe! I’m doing my part to help my amazing daughter be an amazing Mommy now. So I thought making my granddaughters baby food with organic veggies would be so much better than store bought. This recipe is easy and we know exactly what baby girl is eating! Thanks again!

Can you use breast milk instead of water before freezing?

I see this was a long time ago but in case anyone else comes looking for the answer…I just made it using breastmilk. I poured in to my liking rather than a specific amount.

I use breastmilk for other veggies so I figured why not squash?
