Hello everyone! This is just an idea for Ann who posted earlier that she is allergic to orange and pineapple juices. I’ve heard some people are allergic to citrus. I myself, cannot eat fresh pineapple or kiwis. I end up with ulcers in my mouth. I agree with Tina’s post also. But I wanted to add on an extra idea for wonderful Julius w/ out citrus. Instead of using the frozen OJ concentrate just try a different flavor! Maybe Doles Strawberry Banana frozen concentrate. I’ve noticed there are so many different fruit flavored concentrates other than orange. I’d follow the original recipe and just switch the OJ. You never know what new yummy combination you might create!

WOW! I use to have an Orange Julius at break time at least 2-3 times a week. Have developed an allergy to oranges now and can’t have them also no more pineapple…could you recommend a subsitute for the orange juice?
Tina says
Hi Ann,
There really is no viable substitute for OJ, however, do you know what it is that you’re allergic to? Could it be the acid, since you mentioned both OJ & pineapple, as that’s what’s most prevalent in both, along with high sugar? If it’s the acid, there are low acid versions of OJ available, Tropicana has one, as well as no sugar added varieties – you need to check the labels for the sugar levels, too, the OJ mfgr’s are allowed by the FDA to add a certain amount without adding it to the ingredients.
But in any case, you need to find out what the source of the allergy is to see if you can do a work-around and to protect yourself from this in other fruits besides oranges and pineapple. It may surprise you that it may just be a component and not the whole fruit, thereby giving you some freedom of choice.
Good Luck!

Oh my gosh is that ever good – the orange julius recipe … and if you use skim milk, low-fat ice cream and the granulated sugar substitute it’s still just as good.

So glad you liked it, Patti! 😉
