How Many Hangers Does It Take To Make A Star?
Wondering how many hangers you’ll need?
You’ll actually just need 10 White Plastic Hangers total to create your star!
This will give you the perfect number of points to create your Christmas star.
If you don’t already have extra hangers on hand, stores will usually sell multi packs of hangers.
A great place to look for your hangers would be either Walmart or Target.
I sometimes can even order them online and have them shipped to my home.

What You’ll Need to Make a DIY Plastic Coat Hanger Star
In addition to your plastic hangers, you’ll just need two more items to create this lit Christmas star.
Here’s everything you’ll need to round up before you get started…
- 10 White Plastic Hangers
- 35+ Clear 8″ Zip Ties
- 100 strand White Wire Christmas Mini Lights
*Note: This will make one large 3 foot by 3 foot star.
If you’d like to make a smaller star as well, consider using child-sized plastic hangers and a 50-strand light string.
How to Make a DIY Plastic Hanger Star
So you’re ready to make your star? Let’s get started!
Make sure you have a cleared large workspace before you begin.
I made mine at my dining room table, and finished it off on the floor.
Here’s what you’ll do…

1 & 2. Lay out 2 hangers to make a capital ‘A’ shape.
3. Zip tie at the top, and both sides where hangers meet.

4. Then repeat the process 4 more times, so you end up with 5 sets.
How Do You Make A Star Out Of Hangers?
Now, it’s time to attach them all together to make your Christmas star!

5 & 6. Just look at the pictures above to see where I attached my zip ties.
7. Then make sure to attach them tightly, and cut off the ends.

8. If you find any other areas that are slipping or really wiggly, go ahead and attach additional zip ties to those areas.
9. Then, once you have built your star, it’s time to wrap it with lights! Starting at the edge of one of the star points, begin wrapping your lights.

I didn’t do anything fancy here, but occasionally weaved them in and out for extra support.
I just made sure to only have about 20 lights per each section.

How Do You Hang A Christmas Star?
You can hang this Christmas Plastic Hanger Star above your garage, like frugal friend Stacy.
Or you could hang this star from a front yard tree. You could even rest it on the ground leaning against a shrub.

Wherever you decided to place your star, you can enjoy knowing that you have one of the most unique pieces of Christmas decor on your street.
