Now there are a few things that go into creating the best gyros.
First… you need the perfect chicken marinade with Greek yogurt. Check!
Then… you need the perfect tangy Tzatziki sauce. Check!
Once you have those two elements down, all that’s left to do is build your Greek chicken gyros on warm, soft pita bread, and load them up with your favorite toppings.
It really is that easy!
So this week go ahead and give your Chicken Dinner Recipes a delicious kick in the pants. With just a wee bit of effort, you’ll be indulging in your favorite Greek flavors… and create smiles all around the dinner table!
Here’s what you’ll need to get started…

Ingredients
When it comes to building the ultimate flavor packed homemade chicken gyros, all the goodness starts with a really good Greek yogurt chicken marinade.
To make your chicken marinade with Greek yogurt, just round up these ingredients…
- Boneless Skinless Chicken – You’ll want to buy thin sliced chicken or simple pound them out to flatten them for easy grilling. Just like you’ll do with my Honey Mustard Chicken Marinade, Ranch Marinated Chicken, and Italian Chicken Marinade.
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- Plain Greek Yogurt
- Lemon – You’ll use the zest and the juice.
- Garlic – You’ll need 4 cloves.
- Oregano – See How to Dry Oregano!
- Salt – I like to use Sea Salt for best flavor.
- Black Pepper – Since this is a marinade, ground or fresh cracked will both work.
Then, to build your authentic gyros you’ll also need…
- Pita Bread – I recommend a higher quality pita bread to ensure the best gyros!
- Tzatziki Sauce – Store bought… or use my fabulous easy-to-make Authentic Greek Tzatziki Sauce Recipe!
- Optional Toppings – Lettuce, Onions, Tomato, Cucumber, etc.
Like with all of my Easy Dinner Recipes for grilled chicken, you’ll also need a gallon sized freezer bag to prepare your Greek yogurt chicken marinade.

- In small mixing bowl, combine all ingredients except the chicken, and whisk until well combined.
- Add chicken and marinade mixture to a gallon freezer ziploc bag.
- Place bag in the refrigerator to marinate for several hours or overnight, turning and flipping several times.
- When ready for dinner (after several hours of marinating, or up to a day later), remove chicken from the bag, and toss the marinade out.
- Grill your chicken on the grill outside (8 minutes on each side at 400 degrees, or until internal temperature of your chicken is 165 degrees), or on a grill pan inside.
- After chicken is done cooking, slice into strips.
- Warm your pitas up in a skillet on the stove, or in the microwave.
- Then build your gyro! Start with a warm pita. Then add chicken slices drizzled with 1/4 cup of Tzatziki sauce per gyro, before adding your favorite toppings.

- Delicious optional toppings include: Chopped Lettuce, Diced Red Onions, Diced Tomato, Sliced Cucumber, etc! ENJOY!
Notes
- How To Flatten Chicken Breast: To flatten your chicken to an even thickness, simply place it between two large pieces of plastic wrap. Then using the flat side of a meat mallet or tenderizer, gently pound your chicken, starting in the middle.
- Meal Prep Tip: If you’re not ready to cook it yet, after adding the chicken and marinade to the bag, place directly in the freezer for some pre-marinated chicken later! Prior to grilling, just pull out of the freezer, and defrost in the fridge. This will allow all of the yummy flavors to soak into the chicken.
