There are a few different reasons your faucet handle may have become stiff and difficult to turn.
The most common reasons include…
- Mineral deposits that have accumulated on and around your handle
- Old age of your handle
What You’ll Need to Fix a Stiff Single Faucet Handle
- Distilled White Vinegar
- Medium to Large Bowl
- Plumber’s Grease for Faucets and Valves (You can find Plumber’s Grease for about $2.00 at your local hardware or home improvement store, such as Home Depot.)
- Crescent Wrench or Phillips Screw Driver (Depending on the design of the faucet.)
How Do You Loosen a Stiff Faucet Handle?
Remove the faucet handles from faucet, and place in a bowl.
Pour straight vinegar into the bowl until the handles are completely submerged. Allow the handles to soak overnight.
In the morning, thoroughly lubricate the faucet valve with Plumber’s Grease. For reference, the faucet valve is attached to the base of your faucet.
Remove faucet handles from vinegar, rinse with water, dry thoroughly, and re-install.

WD-40 is petroleum-based. I don’t think you’re supposed to use petroleum-based lubricants on plumbing. I don’t know why, but have read that it can make problems worse. Maybe not immediately, but in the long-term.
You should use something like plumber’s grease to lubricate the faucet.
(But soaking the parts in white vinegar is good!)
