What You’ll Need to Grow Rosemary Cuttings
You’ll just need a few simple things to get started…
- Healthy Rosemary Clippings from Main Rosemary Plant
- Small Jar or glass
- Fresh Water
How to Grow Rosemary from Cuttings in Water
You honestly won’t believe how simple it is to grow rosemary from clippings!
Are you ready to get propagating? Here’s what you’ll do…
Cut your Rosemary Clippings from your main rosemary plant.
Be sure to cut clippings from the newer green growth. Once the older growth develops a woodier stem, it will not sprout roots as easily.
Remove leaves about half way up the clippings.
Place your stems in a small jar of water, and put in a well lit spot in your home.
Change the water to freshen it up every few days.
After several weeks, roots should begin to sprout. Mine started around the two week point.
Once you have a cluster of several strong roots, the clipping can be transplanted to a pot of dirt for your indoor herb garden, or outdoor herb garden.
You’re done!
See… I told you this was going to be easy!!

Is there a certain potting soil you put the rooted plants in?
Heidi says
Hi Patty ~ I use potting mix when growing rosemary outside in containers, and garden soil when growing in rosemary in raised beds or in-ground garden beds.
Penny says
Yes, I have tried to root rosemary in water several times. Never have had them root but sure have had them die. I’m trying again right now. I wasn’t changing the water every few days, so maybe that’s why my success was better on the dying end than the rooting end. Glad I stumbled across your site. Thank you.
Heidi says
I hope changing the water helps your clippings take root this time, Penny!
Nina says
Any tricks on growing the rosemary in a pot through the winter months? Mine die every year
Heidi says
Hi Nina ~ it really depends how cold your temperatures get in the Winter. Rosemary can tolerate mild winters, but doesn’t do well with freezing temperatures. One idea is to bring it inside for the Winter before the temperatures dip into the low 30’s. Hope that helps! 🙂
Wini says
I live in Maryland…grew rosemary in a pot on the deck.
.it went dormant. in the winter, came back in Spring.

Danielle says
Oh my goodness, I had no idea!!! I do grow green onions in water often, but then over time they get a little gross and the roots get really long. Will they grow outside if I put them in a pot? I am so going to try growing all of these herbs!
Heidi says
Hi Danielle ~ yes, after growing those green onions in water a few times, you can absolutely plant up them outside and grow them in a pot! In Arizona, they grow really well in the late Fall, Winter and Spring, but will tend to bolt and try to go to seed in the hot Summer / early Fall months. During those times, you can just grow them inside in a pot, too. 🙂 Here are some tips for how I grow my green onions… hope this helps!
