#1: Get Paid To Declutter Your Garage… I Did!

Saw on a wooden platform.

If you want to make more space in your garage, you might as well make some money while you’re at it!

Take an inventory of items you haven’t used for one or more year. If the item is a more valuable item, like a bike, tool, work bench, shelving etc… you could make some money by selling it online!

We recently sold some never used overhead shelves still in the box for $300, a mountain bike for $200, and a miter saw for $120!

Consider selling on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or Ebay.

#2: Declutter Your Garage Fast With A Garage Sale!

Use these 30 Garage Sale Tips and Tricks and earn some money from those items in your garage you no longer need or want.

Then, use the proceeds from your garage sale to purchase shelving, bins, and other items to help get your garage organized on a budget!

When your sale it over… just let go of whatever can’t be sold.

Any items not sold at your garage sale, you can either recycle, toss, or donate at a local thrift store.

#3: Use Every Inch of Your Wall Space!

Garage items hanging on the wall.

One of the easiest ways to declutter your garage quickly is with a garage organization rail system.

This is a great way to make better use of your wall space and to get all of those large garden tools organized and easily accessible at the same time. Plus, a rail system like this Rubbermaid Rail Kit is usually fairly easy to install.

You can use this wall organizer for organizing your:

  • Shovels
  • Rakes
  • Large Brooms
  • Pruners
  • Loppers
  • Cordless Shrub Trimmers
  • Pole Trimmers
  • Garden Hoses
  • Power Cords
  • Garage Hand Tools

Rail systems also give you the added flexibility to change or update your garage storage layout anytime you want.

You can even create a wall mounted fishing rod organizer to store your long fishing rods!

#4: Try These Small Garage Cabinet Ideas…

Small garage cabinet with a lock.

If you don’t have a lot of space available in your garage, maximizing your wall space for storage is a must.

We made use of an unused corner of our garage to hang the cabinet pictured.

When deciding which garage cabinet will work best for you, pay attention to reviews to verify the quality of the cabinet. Also look for cabinets that included the mounting hardware for no additional price.

I personally like to have a few cabinets that have a lock, so we can better secure more valuable items in the garage. Or keep chemicals locked away from the kiddos.

Once you’ve identified a few wall cabinet options that will work for you… be sure to wait for a sale!

I scored 50% off our Husky Wall Cabinets (Home Depot brand) that included all of the necessary hardware to mount the cabinets to my garage wall.

The cabinets also included the locks we wanted.

#5: Then Add Some Garage Ceiling Storage Racks!

Garage with overhead storage.

Don’t let that ceiling space go to waste… especially if you have tall ceilings in your garage!

Garage ceiling racks are such a cost effective and budget friendly way to get organized fast and remove that clutter from your garage floor!

Check out the Fleximount Overhead Garage Storage Rack for a simple and efficient way to save space!

Betty writes: “I really like the overhead storage idea because we have a really high ceiling with lots of usable space.”

#6: Go Vertical on the Wall With Garage Storage Racks

Metal shelves in a garage.

Using sturdy metal storage racks will provide you with one of the most flexible storage solutions available.

Plus, metal storage racks can be unloaded and relocated if you want to “redecorate” or rearrange your garage. They are also fairly easy to assemble and don’t require any special tools.

Waiting for a deal on metal storage racks is a must, as these frequently go on sale throughout the year.

#7: Implement the Ultimate Flexible Garage Storage Solution: Storage Bins!

Large bins with labels like \"Painting Supplies.\"

One of my favorite Garage Organization Ideas on a Budget are storage bins. Storage bins are the ultimate flexible storage solution.

They can be used with metal storage racks, garage ceiling storage racks, garage wall shelving, or simply stacked on top of each other.

Plus, storage bins can be used and reused for years to come.

One reader writes: “This is what we do. It works great!!!”

#8: Don’t Forget to Add Labels To Your Storage Bins… or try Color Coded Bins!

Labeled bins, including Winter Clothes and Holiday Decorations.

Take the mystery out of “what’s in that bin” when you add detailed labels to each of your garage storage bins!

You can get as fancy as using printed labels you make yourself, or keep it easy with peel and stick vinyl letters.

Or… you can try color coding your bins for an easy way to remember what’s inside!

One reader writes: “Love those bold easy to read stickers!”

Beth writes: “I use tubs of different colors for decorations of each season/holiday. Red tubs with green lids for Christmas storage, orange tubs with black lids for Halloween, brown for Thanksgiving, pink for Valentine’s Day, etc.”

#9: Put These 5 Gallon Bucket Storage Ideas to Use…

Blue pool noodles in a red bucket.

5 gallon buckets are easy to find and fairly inexpensive making them an ultimate Garage Organization Ideas on a Budget.

You can pick some up at your local Home Depot, Lowe’s, Tractor Supply and even Walmart!

I personally have a collection of 5 gallon buckets from both Lowe’s (blue in color) and Tractor Supply (both red and white).

These 5 gallon buckets really come in handy when doing yard work, but they’re also really useful in the garage. They can easily be hung from the wall using a hook, or attached to a rail system like the Rubbermaid Fasttrack Rail Kit.

These are some of my favorite things to store in 5 gallon buckets:

  • Balls
  • Pool Noodles
  • Scrap Pieces of Wood

#10: Bike Storage Ideas For A Small Garage – Go Vertical and Hang From the Wall!

Bikes hanging from hooks.

Bikes take up a LOT of floor space in your garage, so using your walls and ceiling space for bike storage is a must!

One of the least expensive ways to store your bikes, is to hang them from a wall vertically using large hooks fastened to wall studs.

Bike wheel hanging from a hook.

To avoid having to lift your bike onto a hook high on the wall, one alternative is to install a Bike Storage Pulley System in your garage instead.

#11: DIY In A Tight Space With This Small Garage Workbench Idea! (It’s Collapsible)

Stools and a table under a dart board.

If you don’t have space available in your garage for a traditional workbench, consider installing a collapsible workbench that can be put down and out of the way when not in use.

In my garage, we installed a folding workbench that provided a much needed workspace.

The best part is that when it’s folded away, we can still fit a car in the garage!

#12: DIY Anywhere With a DIY Mobile Workbench!

Portable sawhorse on concrete.

Now if you don’t have enough space in your garage for a permanent workbench, consider creating a simple DIY mobile workbench instead.

What You’ll Need to make your own compact DIY Mobile Workbench:

  • A pair of high weight capacity saw horses, that are also collapsible. (like the Bora Portamate Speedhorse or Kreg Track Horse)
  • 3/4 inch thick Sheet of Plywood. (I like to use 2 smaller sheets that are 2′ x 4′ each, as these are much easier to move and lift.)
  • Optional 2 x 4 Boards for added support. (These can be used with a Bora Portamate Speedhorse style saw horse, and will give your plywood work surface additional support.)
  • The collapsible saw horses and small sheets of plywood are compact and can easily be stored on a shelf when not being used.

This temporary or portable workbench can easily be assembled and disassembled, providing you with a workspace whenever you need it.

I even use my portable workbench for potting plants in my backyard garden!

#13: Start Organizing Tools with a Mobile Toolbox on Wheels…

Black toolbox on wheels.

A larger tool chest with slide out drawers is one of the best ways to organize tools. But when you only have a small amount of space in your garage, getting a toolbox with a workbench top can help make your space really count!

We’ve been using a mobile toolbox with a wood workbench top in our garage for years. Both my hubby and I love it. It’s so handy!

#14: The Best Way to Organize Screwdrivers!

Screw drivers hanging on inside of garage cabinet door.

The best way to organize and store screwdrivers in your garage is with a screwdriver wall organizer or a screwdriver cabinet organizer.

A tool organizer for your screwdrivers will help you find your tools faster, and an organizer will also help you avoid misplacing and losing your screwdrivers.

My hubby found this inexpensive organizer to hang in a garage wall cabinet at Harbor Freight for just a few dollars.

#15: Learn How To Organize Hardware and Small Parts…

Small containers of nails and other hardware.

Finding a good way to organize hardware and small parts can really be tricky.

For years we used a hardware organizer with little drawers than hung on the wall. But it was always hard to remember what was in all of those little drawers. Plus my garage had poor lighting, so you couldn’t see what was in the drawers without pulling each one out to look inside.

We recently started using a Stanley Small Parts Organizer with removable bins. The Stanley Small Parts Organizers are reasonably sturdy and they stack well on shelves or in garage cabinets.

Plus, the bright yellow colored removable storage bins make it so much easier to see what I am looking for.

#16: Try This DIY Baby Food Jar Hardware Storage Idea

Don’t toss those baby food jars! Instead, use your baby food jars to create a genius space saving hardware storage solution!

Small nails and screws fit perfectly in a baby food jar. Plus, you can attach the baby food jar lid to the underside of a shelf.

Then you can simply screw and unscrew the jar to retrieve the hardware you need.

This is one easy upcycling idea you need to try!

#17: Store Paint for Touch Ups in Small Mason Jars

Paint brush on a jar.

Don’t let your leftover paint go to waste… or take up all your valuable garage storage space!

Make sure your touch-up paint is ready and accessible at all times!

Rather than touch-up painting becoming a big ordeal, this simple little solution for How to Store Leftover Paint in Mason Jars makes touch up time a cinch!

Opening a mason jar that is storing your paint is so much easier than trying to pry open an old can of paint. Plus, if you didn’t get the lid on tight the last time you used it, your paint could be dried up and ruined.

Fido makes a mark? No problem!

Little Junior makes a scuff? It can be gone in a minute!

Open up your paint cans, stir paint well with a stir stick, then carefully pour into Mason Jar.

Label the lid’s jar with a Sharpie… like “Katie’s Bedroom”, “Master Bathroom”, “Interior House Paint – Living Room”, “Exterior House Color – Main”, and so on.

Now… instead of having to find a screw driver to pry off the lid of a paint can, you can simply unscrew the lid of your mason jar and voila… with a little stir you’re ready for that next painting touch up!

Brenda writes: “I also attach a paint chip sample to my “touch up” paint containers, so I can keep track of the paint name. In addition, I write where and when I purchased the paint on the paint chip so I have all of the information I need in case I need to buy more later. This has come in really handy when I used up all of the paint in my large paint can and discarded it.”

#18: Ditch the Big Old Air Compressor For This Space-Saving Tire Inflator!

Air compressor in front of a car tire.

Use a compact tire inflator instead of a traditional air compressor that can take up a lot of your garage space.

This compact tire inflator can easily fit onto a small garage storage shelf or inside a wall mounted storage cabinet.

#19: Try These Garage Storage Ideas for Christmas Decorations!

Make sure to store delicate items, like your Christmas wreaths and other Christmas decor in protective cases. These items can then be stored on shelves or on storage racks in your garage.

#22: Maximize Every Square Inch Of Space… Even Where You Sit!

Rolling stool in front of large bins.

Every garage should have a comfy little stool to sit on… and there’s no reason your garage stool can’t include some extra storage too!

I love my short little garage stool with wheels. It helps me get down low without breaking my back. 🙂

Stool with places to put car detailing items.

I also love the convenient storage included!

My hubby even uses it when he’s detailing the wheels on the car.
