Kitchen Organization Hacks

Is clutter taking over in your kitchen? It’s easy to conquer your kitchen chaos with these simple Kitchen Organization Hacks!

Allie writes: "These are great tips - there is nothing worse than a cluttered kitchen."

These DIY ideas, timesaver tips, and easy ways to do things better work like a charm for kitchens of all sizes!

You won’t believe how tidy and organized your kitchen will be once you implement these simple changes!

So are you ready to get organized once and for all?

These cheap kitchen organization ideas are the super-simple solutions you’ve been looking for…

#1: Purge, Purge, Purge!

Two coffee carafes on a counter.

The first step to getting your kitchen organized is to simply remove EVERYTHING you don’t need or use.

Take the time to go through every single drawer and cabinet and really analyze what’s inside.

Over the years, it’s so easy to accumulate things that we actually don’t even need or use.

Ask yourself things like… “Do I really need two of these?” or “When was the last time I actually used this?”

It will take a bit of time, but really is so worth it!

Then, take your extra items you don’t need and find a new home for them… you could donate them to the thrift store, gift to a young adult who is moving out into their first apartment, or share with someone in need.

You won’t believe what a difference decluttering will make!

Terri writes: “I did a MAJOR declutter of tools & dishes a couple of years ago, and that helped immensely.”

Aubrey writes: “When we remodeled our kitchen, if I hadn’t used something in the last year, I donated it. My kitchen is better organized with the stuff I use on the regular and everything just looks so clean. I love it!”

Sara writes: “I only keep items I use. I’m constantly purging & donating.”

Ann writes: “I have gotten rid of lots and truly use what I have. Things often have dual purposes. For example, I have a water pitcher that is used as a vase some of the time. Lastly, everything has a home and is returned there after it is used.”

Clare writes: “Any gadget I don’t use gets donated.”

Meri writes: “Purge!! I only keep what I REALLY use. Example: I had 7 different frying pans. So I kept a small, medium, and large one. The other 4… donated and gone!”

Connie writes: “I keep only what I use, and do a deep clean at least once a year.”

Andrea writes: “I got rid of soooo much stuff that I didn’t use! My cabinets were stuffed with hand-me-downs, “just in case” items and things that I didn’t need. I did a sweep and donated a bunch. NOW, I can neatly stack items and find what I really use.”

#2: Have a Place For Everything, and Keep Everything In Its Place!

Round tray with coffee equipment.

I know, I know… we’ve all heard that saying, but guess what – it works! One of the fastest ways to build up clutter in your kitchen is simply by not knowing where something goes.

Make a ‘home’ for everything in your kitchen, and then always take the time to put things back where they go.

It really will only take a few seconds here and there to put things away, and it will have a massive impact on how tidy your kitchen feels!

Blake writes: “Group everything together by task or like objects.”

Sarah writes: “Keep lids on the tupperware when you put them away so that you dont have to find the lid.”

Barb writes: “Put everything you rarely use but don’t want to get rid of in one out of the way cupboard, thus decluttering the space for things you use regularly. A couple of rarely used appliances, fancy garnish makers, spare crockery for big parties, a few nostalgic pieces I hardly use but occasionally love… they’re clean and stored for use when needed but out of the way of everyday appliances and utensils, making it much easier to run an organized kitchen.”

Judy writes: “Always put things back where they belong.”

#3: Skip Kitchen Gadgets You Won’t Use

Coffee makers on display at a store.

Now that you’ve decluttered your kitchen, it’s time to rethink how you buy things.

When it comes to the fancy new kitchen tools, gadgets, and small appliances… be strong and look away.

Unless you think it’s something you will REALLY use often, why not just skip it? You never needed them before, right?

You’ll save money and save space in your newly decluttered kitchen!

Donna writes: “Buy Less”

Kelly writes: “We don’t own all the unnecessary gadgets.”

Melinda writes: “Limit how much stuff you have. I just got a new apartment. I downsized a lot. The size of my apartment is way way smaller than my last place.”

Becky writes: “Let’s just say that if I can make a place for something then that’s where it’ll always go and if I don’t use it, it goes out the door. I have been tossing out some old cookware and making room for other things because truthfully I don’t need a large amount of anything in my kitchen. It’s just me living here so my kitchen needs are going to be different than the kitchen of other households. I can make a variety of meals with what I have without going overboard with the amount of dishes that’s available to me and I’m not even a chef LOL!”

#4: Stack and Nest as Much as You Can!

Measuring cups nested inside each other.

Another simple trick is to find a way to nest what you have, or buy items that easily nest.

Pictured above are my glass measuring cups (1 cup, 2 cup, and 4 cup) that nest neatly and save so much space! I also have a set of glass nesting mixing bowls that are such a space saver.

Angel writes: “My Pyrex pans and bowls all nest perfectly. Less is more.”

#5: Install Pull-Out Shelves to Double your Storage Space!

Pots and pans on a sliding cabinet shelf.

Are you simply short on space?

It’s always easier to stay organized when you have enough space. Consider adding pull-out shelves to your kitchen cabinets to double the space.

When we moved into our home these pull-outs had already been installed, and they’ve been such a game changer!

Now I can store pots and pans right above my crockpots, and take advantage of all that extra space.

#6: Go Vertical!

Plates and mugs in a cabinet.

You can also double the space of your cabinets by simply adding Kitchen Cabinet Shelf Racks!

This is such a quick and easy trick.

Rose writes: “I do not have a lot cabinet space so I use organizing risers to make more storage space!”

#7: Hang Your Pots!

Are your pots and pans taking over your kitchen cupboards? Consider hanging them from a trendy pot rack on the ceiling!

It gives such a fun, industrial chef-like look to your kitchen!

#8: Free Up Drawer Space with Countertop Storage Containers

Cooking utensils in a cannister labeled \"Store.\"

A simple way to free up space in your drawers is to neatly store some of your most frequently used kitchen tools in a tidy countertop storage container.

#9: Add Floating Shelves for Even More Space!

Baskets, plates, bowls, and pitches on floating shelves.

Or consider installing floating shelves in your kitchen to give you another spot to store plates, bowls, pretty pitchers, and even tidy baskets of things you reach for often.

#10: Baskets and Jars Are Your Friends

White basket labeled \"Plastic Lids.\"

Finally, take the time to capture the clutter with baskets and jars.

I love using plastic bins for small items like extra lids, and mason jars for things like straws and cupcake liners.

Organizing cupcake liners is easy (and pretty) when you stack them up in a quart sized wide mouth mason jar…

Colorful cupcake liners in a jar.

Cathy writes: “I go to the Dollar Tree and buy lots of plastic baskets. I put them in the fridge and my pantry.”

Carol writes: “Use rectangle or square shaped storage containers… there is too much unused space around round containers”

And finally… if all else fails, Tracy writes: “I invite my mom for a visit.” Girl, you know your kitchen is going to get all tidied up if Mom’s coming over! 🙂

Kathy writes: “I clean as I go. If Im cleaning vegetables I have one of those sacks from the store.. throwing everything into it as I chop the vegetables. Even some times just tape it to the work area so I can just slide things right into it. I use a pants hanger and put like magazine that have a recipe I want to use. Out of my way on counter top.. does not get spilled on. Sink n full of hot soapy water.. wash as I go.. less mess at the end.. only have things from on the table to wash.”

Michelle writes: “As I am cooking, I make sure to wash the dishes and wipe the counters, too.”

Barb writes: “When I was sharing we used to have a rule that whoever cooks, the other cleans up, but that soon changed. I clean up as I go so there’s only a few dishes to wash after a meal. My housemates didn’t, so they have a mess to contend with afterwards. We have different styles and it’s all about choice so much fairer we clean up our own messes.”
