How to Dry Orange Slices in Oven

When it comes to the Fall and Christmas holiday seasons, one of my favorite things to do is decorate with dried oranges. They’re just so pretty!!

That’s why today I wanted to show you How to Dry Orange Slices in Oven! And trust me… you won’t believe how EASY it is!

Debbie writes: "Made these the other night. They turned out awesome! Thanks for the idea!"

Plus, there are so many fun ways to use them to add a pretty pop of color around your home!

You can make gorgeous garlands, string them along your kitchen window for a pretty stained glass look, or add them to mason jar candles.

Or how about making some vintage orange slice Christmas ornaments as a festive craft?

The lights will glow beautifully through your ornaments, and they’ll cost less than 10 cents each to make.

I’ve seen the ornaments selling for $4.00 each online, so you’ll save a bundle making them yourself!

Goodness… you can even add them to packages or use them later for a dreamy DIY stovetop air freshener!

So are you ready to learn how to dry orange slices for Fall and Christmas Decorations? Here’s what you need to do…

How Do You Dry Orange Slices?

It’s actually SO easy! Your oranges will slowly dry out when placed in a low heat oven for about 2 hours.

How Long Will Dried Orange Slices Last?

When dried properly, they’ll stay gorgeous all season long!

Or if you’re in a dry, less humid climate… you may even be able to use your original dried oranges again next year!

Here in Arizona mine seem to just last and last. As they say in AZ… it’s a dry heat. 🙂

What You’ll Need to Dehydrate Orange Slices:

Here’s what you’ll need to round up before you start…

  • 3 medium Oranges
  • Baking Sheet
  • Cookie Cooling Rack or Small Baking Rack
  • Parchment Paper
  • Non-stick Cooking Spray
  • Paper Towel
  • Sharp, serrated knife

How to Dry Orange Slices in the Oven:

You won’t believe how EASY these are to make!

Here’s what you’ll do…

1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees.

2. Trim down a piece of parchment paper to fit on your cookie sheet, and top with a cookie drying rack.

3. Spray your drying rack lightly with non-stick cooking spray.

4. Then slice your oranges VERY thinly. I ended up without 15 orange slices, or 5 per orange.

5. Pat dry each side of your orange slices with a paper towel, then transfer them one by one to the drying rack.

6. Bake for 1 hour, flip orange slices, then bake for 1 more hour.

7. After 2 hours, you’ll want to check your orange slices every 5 minutes to see if they’re done. They can burn easily, so you’ll need to pay close attention.

Mine were done around 2 hours and 30 minutes, but times can vary based upon different ovens and the width of your slices.

8. Once they are dried, remove from oven, leave on the rack, place rack on your kitchen counter, and allow to finish drying completely overnight.

9. The next day, simply add some twine and hang on your tree! Or if you’d like to spruce up your garland, you can add some fishing line and affix the orange slices to your garland.

Wasn’t that SO easy?

Now go check out my favorite ways to use dehydrated orange slices…

How to Make Orange Slice Rustic Mason Jar Candle Holders:

One sweet and simple way to put your orange slices to use is to create some beautiful rustic mason jar candle holders!

1. Poke a small hole in your orange slice {I used a sharp knife}

2. Then thread a long piece of twine through the orange slice.

3. Wrap the twine around the upper threads of the jar several times, and knot it in the back.

I like to tuck the knot in underneath the other pieces of twine, and secure to the jar using a small piece of double sided tape or glue dots.

4. Then tuck some silk branch sprigs underneath the twine, behind the orange slice, and you’re done!

Gift Wrapping with Orange Slices:

Another fun idea is to add your dehydrated orange slices to your gift packaging! I like to tuck in some fresh rosemary sprigs too for a beautiful look!
