Looking for some birthday advice says
Hey! I’m 11, turning 12 in about a month. For those who have knowledge of Universal Studios blackout days (my family owns 4 year-round passes that we use often), what do you think would be a good plan? The only idea I have had so far is to go to Universal Studios (Hollywood) for 2 days. If we do so, I will be bringing only ONE friend. The plan is to get 2 rooms in a nearby hotel, the rooms that have doors between them. At night, we will walk the citywalk and eat somewhere inexpensive (like Panda Express, although ALL of the places on the citywalk are super expensive!) Does this plan sound good, or should I do something else? (And how much estimated does 1 Universal Studios Hollywood ticket + 2 hotel rooms cost?) Thanks! 🙂

I am turning 12 soon and I really need some more ideas for my (hopefully going to be) epic birthday party!! I am doing lip syncing and karaoke, makeovers, and blue elephant exchange. I really need more fun ideas that aren’t childish! I don’t even know what the dinner should be!
Please help me………I really need help!!!!
Josephine says
@Megan,
Here are some ideas:
For your dinner you could have pizza as I think it’s the easiest and you can’t really go wrong with it… and here are ideas for activities:
DIY slime, Wahsi tape crafts, paint your own T shirt/bag/canvas sneakers/canvas cap. You could also make some jewellery but with fancier/cooler kind of beads…
I hope you party goes well!

I am 10 years old and I am going to have a cost free sleepover with my friend Zoe for my birthday. We will do mani pedi with nail polish, ride our bikes, go to the park, watch a movie, hang out at the mall. Simple as that. If you don’t have nail polish you can get it for cheap at Walmart or Dollar Tree.

I am a 12 year old girl and my birthday is coming up in a week. I don’t have a theme but my party is all over the place. So I’m having a sleepover party/movie night but since my party starts early i don’t want to watch movies until we fall asleep so as soon as my friends come over we are just going to hang out in my garage that my mo m is going to clean up and play ping pong, ping pong tables are just $37 for rental but we are borrowing ours from our cousins. After that we are going to have a dance a thon and just play games on our xbox 1 or ps4. When we are all tired from that we are going to play some fun board games and make smores, by the end of that we will be ready for popcorn and some funny/scary movies.

Susan says
I had read years ago in a parenting mag that you should give your children a set amount of money (we chose $100.00) and that is their present and party. They can either keep the whole amount, or they can throw their party. Before we had been spending hundreds of dollars on party food for the adults that came. It teaches the children about money, and they have a better appreciation of what things cost. So the ones having sleep overs, they had to pay for all the food for dinner, snacks and breakfast. It is amazing what things don’t survive, like fancy decorations and matching everything. We did a lot of make your own pizza (dough from the bread machine, but they could by whomp biscuits) and decorate your own cupcake. this is food and an activity, so double duty. One girl did spa party, we always had piñata that we made ourselves and stuffed with a 8.00 bag of candy. The one child with a birthday in early November kept her Halloween candy. Also going to the after holiday clearance saves a lot on some of the supplies. It has been a valuable lesson and the kids learn and love it. The look forward to it every year. Some decide to use the money to buy themselves on big gift as they are getting older. The two summer birthday parties do camping trips for theirs, the two winter parties are usually at home with the sleep overs.
Susan says
Also the gift bags that used to cost me $40.00, turned into l0ot from the piñata which also had some toys, or they were scrapped. The spa party usually included some take homes like the sleeping masks, but gift bags were not a big thing when you were using your own money. The dollar store or walmart had good things for gift bags, but my girls always invited the whole class when they were in elementary, so the piñata idea was born. Super easy…..Balloons (two taped together for the heart in February, disco ball, etc) flour and water paper mache and tissue paper outside. warning: too many layers make it very hard to break. Give yourself a week for proper layering and drying).

My daughter turned 13 on Halloween so the weekend before we had her party. We had a homemade bonfire and went around the circle having everyone add 30sec to a ghost story that I started. It was funny, scary and adventurous all together. Then we roasted hot dogs and marshmallows. We then tied balloons to each others ankles and they had to pop the others before theirs got pop (a few balloons had a dollar in it). About an hour left of the party we went down to the basement where it was decorated ($8 dollar tree) and played Thriller and other Halloween music off my you tube account (free) and had cake ($15). Her friends talked about it all year and now she wants to do the same thing this year…..We are happy to do it again since it was a very cheap and entertaining birthday party.
Julie says
For October party’s you can put out pumpkins around the neon or hood then put notes on them telling them where the next pumpkin will be. The party will be cheap be tons of fun!!!!
Kim says
Game Parties are high energy, cheap and always fun. Search the internet for game ideas. Decorate colorfully and cheaply with solid color plastic table clothes (hang them on walls, over windows, put them on the ceilings/floors – so much color) balloons are colorful and cheap. I often borrow our church fellowship room, it’s free and not in my house. Inexpensive snacks and a take home treat of a balloon that was used for decoration, a Dollar Store notebook and cute pen – a fun day! I always make some sort of photo back drop take a group photo and that becomes the thank you note.

These are all such great ideas!! I have done a cooking birthday party where they decorated pizzas and cupcakes, had make your own sundae bar and decorated aprons that we bought cheap from Hobby Lobby or a craft store. We also had a Hawaiian Luau one year with a blow up pool, Tiki bars with bartenders (daddy and a friend) making strawberry smoothies, and we split the girls in two groups and gave them each a brown bag with ramdom items in them such as a wig, a doll, sunglasses, an unbrella, big shirt, roll of toilet paper… and they had 30 minutes to get together in their group and come up with a play to present and be judged on who’s play was the most creative, funniest ect.. We had a spa party with stations… a hairdresser friend doing hair, a friend doing make-up, a nail station, a make your own craft hair pretty station where they hot glue gun flowers and stuff on clips and headbands ( the take home gift). All the girls wore a fancy dress to the party. A favorite 12 year old party was at the mall where I made a scavenger hunt. Since most girls have an ipod or phone or ipad, this was perfect and CHEAP!! I preprinted Scavenger Hunt directions such as “take a picture of yourself with a bald man, or try on matching pajamas and get a pic, or get a pic of your group riding on a merry go round, or find a napkin from Subway… (make the clues harder depending on the girls age)the girls split into groups of 3, and each had an adult with them. They did the items and we met back to have Dairy Queen Birthday cake that they held for us in the foodcourt and compare pics. What Fun!!!

I have the most fun party ever! as a 12 year old girl who has done this party, i can promise that this is so much fun!
camping party
you can do this with very low cost if you already have a tent.
set up your tent in the backyard.have all the girls put their stuff in it an d maybe bring out a mini tv or laptop so you can watch movies.make smores when it gets dark or play flashlight tag.
theres a fun game where you stick stickers on ppl and call them mosqueeto bites. try to stick them on each other without each other noticing. the person who has the least wins 🙂
i hope u have fun!!
Liz says
You can take PVC and fabric to set up a makeshift tent in the living room. You can put air mattresses on the floor. We made s’mores at a campfire ad had a scavenger hunt and made lanterns out of old cans. The girls slept over and each girl got s’mores trail mix as their goody bag. Surprisingly if you invite some girls over for pizza, cake, and a movie the girls will make most of the fun themselves!

I am getting ready to throw my neice a birthday party, she will be turning 13. We are doing a make your own ice cream dessert party (I’ve bought small mason jars, and will have different kinds of ice cream, toppings, brownies, crushed cookies, whipped cream, etc…). The girls will start the party by making their own dessert, then they will go into the freezer and they can either have them as the last part of the party, or can take them home with them. I’ve also done cooking parties for my daughter and friends’ children, where everyone has made their own pizzas, decorated their own cookies, etc.
I also look for discounted paper products at Target, Dollar Tree and party stores, that can be used for many different themes. For example, red paper products from Christmas, can also be used for a Valentine’s party, or can be part of birthday party themes, like pirates. You can get them for 50-75% off if you watch for the sales :-).
:Paramore says
I am a tween myself and for my 12th birthday i had a Paramore themed birthday party. Not all girls are giry. If your daughter is a rocker chic this is the best party for her. You can buy dollar store table cloths and cups, plates, etc. with youur daughter’s favorite band’s main colors. Some examples are: pink and black for Avril Lavigne and red, orange, black and yellow for Paramore. And make homemade posters and print pictures for Decoration and for the music you can purchase all the cd’s and play them all in the party and that can also be your daughter’s birthday present! For activities they can play pretend concert: Buy cheap inflatable microphones and guitars that they can keep and have each one of her friends take turns being bandmembers and for the drumset use tables and chairs and chopsticks as drum sticks. They can make collages with pictures you can print out and markers. And they can also make their very own music videos and put it on a disc for each one to take home. For party favors i made cupcakes with the band’s name and main colors on it and i put them on Wilton single cupcake boxes found at Michael’s or Party City. For the cake make it yourself! You can put the band’s symbol and name on the cake and even have your daughter help you! this was one of my best birthay parties ever and my friends and I had a blast. Hope ths helps! 🙂

Tween Girls love to be treated like “grown-up ladies”. 🙂
Have a spa party, give each girl a massage, (you can find recipes online to make your own scrubs, and soaks), then give each girl a facial and manicure or predicure. For favors give each girl a bottle of nail polish, some other little girly cosmedics. I got a bunch of lotions, body splash, some cute flower hairclips, and nail polish. Then I got a big bunch of cute little baskets (also from Dollar Tree :] ) and arranged the little stuff in it. Girls love it!
Anne says
Dollar store balloons are the ONLY balloons I will buy. My girls just LOVE balloons & I like to make cupcakes & leave them undecorated. I get a couple kinds of frosting & then a variety of toppings (peelable twizzlers in the multicolor pack, M&M’s, sprinkles, even some edible letters or animals) for them to decorate their own cupcake. It’s ALWAYS a hit no matter the age (one year I even had a few parents asking to make their own).
Jenny says
You could do a hotel party. Get a room at a local hotel with a pool. Let the girls swim (and get super tired), feed them, take nail polish you probably already have on hand, and fix their hair while their nails dry. Most hotels have a breakfast of some kind, so that is one less expense. BEST part of all of that…. NO CLEAN UP!!!
Lisa Schiro says
I save colored comic paper from Sunday newspapers and that is what I use for wrap. Kids don’t care about cards…so I don’t use those. I use the dollar store for balloons. You could pick her up from school carrying birthday balloons (one per year)…that is super fun. You could create a sign in paper with butcher paper and have all of her friends make a personal message for her on it.
Use your neighbors for Scavenger hunts. Spa at home is a memorable and inexpensive way to celebrate. One idea I saw that was cute is the take away gift was a tiny live plant in a tiny plant box…They took a larger plant, cut it down and planted it.
Tanya says
The best birthday party I ever had was around 12 or 13. My parents borrowed a 2 room tent (like you camp out with) and I had my friends sleep over. They had given me a cassette player (showing my age) that had a microphone and we recorded ourselves singing to Whitney Houston all night. It was so much fun and probably cost very little. My friends still talk about it.
Jade says
We did that once for my 11th birthday except without the karaoke and singing! It was so much fun! We also had glow stuff to use!
Mary Ann says
We just had a rock star party for my 9 yr old. Eight girls were occupied playing Wii most of the time. A friend let us borrow Just Dance and all the girls would dance even if they didn’t have a controller. When they arrived they could dress up with sequined scarves ( just cut up sequined fabric from Joanns) and gems stickers, necklaces and bracelets that they could keep after their photo session. We also had inflatable microphones that they could play with then take home. Food was pizza, etc. and we made a guitar shaped cake and microphone cupcakes (just cake baked in ice cream cones with licorice strings cords). We did have a small arts and crafts project but older girls mostly will occupy themselves. I did have the idea that they could make their own pizzas and tie-dye shirts but I’ll save that for a later birthday. Good luck!
Jenny Torres says
You can get Subway pre-cut sandwiches & fixings & cut them. You can buy Little Caesar’s “Hot-N-Ready” pizzas which are 5 dollars each or you can have nachos as your food. Buy a bag of tortilla chips, a Crock-Pot” of melted cheese & another Crock-Pot with chili beans. I would buy solid colored table cloths which can be found at The Dollar Tree, solid colored napkins & utensils from Wal-Mart or The Dollar Tree as well. Than I would decorate each table with fun center pieces using a glass vase found at The Dollar Tree & real flowers at supermarkets or artificial flowers at The Dollar Tree as well & place them on a Scrapbook page(s) as a “place-mat” for your center pieces using the colors or designs of your theme. You can purchase balloons at The Dollar Tree. Liter of sodas are pretty cheap at any supermarkets & water bottles are great. I hope I helped 🙂

Here are a few money saving ideas I have used in many parties in my life time that I use now for my kids
1. Go to Chuck E Cheese (games are cheap the kids run around like crazy and if you just walk in it tends to be cheaper.)
2. Give each child a disposable camera as they walk in to take pictures. It is amazing the many different angles the kids capture events.
3. Definatly bake your own goodies and at the age of 12 the girls could do a lot of the work themselves. Have them make different elements of the cake. Make it like a “Cake Boss” feel and give each girl a task. The theme of the cake could be “Princess (daughter’s name)” and have one team make a small castle out of cereal treats, another team make the Princess and another team making the girly decorations to go around the cake. When it all come together they will be proud! (make sure to give them plenty of ideas and candies and tools to be creative.
4. Do some mani pedi’s and have them all be pampered and let each girl choose at random a color to paint the birthday girls nails. Keeps them all involved and the birthday girl the center of it all.
5. Another wat cute idea. Have your husband yourself and any brothers, dress up as servents. White shirt n tie, an apron and towel on arm and serve the girls. But really play the part and make the girls feel like they are the ones who get to rule! Maybe go thru it with your daughter before hand so she doesnt become abusive :P…
Good luck! And Have FUN!!

that seems so cool ill defenitly have to try it

For cheap balloons and other decor, check out the Dollar Tree. This is also great for party favors.
Park pavilions are always free, don’t require a lot of decor or cleanup, and kids love the playground.
You could also check out group rates for zoos and museums. Many offer free admission on some afternoons! And, most zoos allow picnics.
Also, I am a BeautiControl consultant, and offer my customers spa parties for $3-5/girl (parties for adults are free, but since I do not sell to children, I have to charge to cover my costs). Not all consultants do this, but it is worth a shot to look up one in your area.

great idea I’ll try that too.Oh and could you follow me I like your ideas , just look for Brooklyn Rose . Hey ! Look at that both of our names are brook!

I would suggest for your daughter to have a slumber birthday party, with 8-9 girls only including her, have order Pizza, have snacks and all the girly movies for kids that age. Cup Cakes for the BD cake and everyone can add their own sprinkles but the icing color should be the Birthday Girl’s choice. All you have to do is clean the house gather movies, her friends can also bring their fav girl movies from home that way you save on buying movies. Buy Pizza and snacks and drinks (soda or juice) and Balloons and decorate her room or where ever the girls will be having their slumber party.
Let me know if you like it. All the best to you and Happy Birthday to your Daughter.

I’ve always given my daughter big birthday parties. First you have to decided the theme. People tend to go all out with the decor. Kids could careless. Buy streamers and maybe a few balloons and you’re good. You can make several games from things you may already have or from things at a dollar store. I don’t like traditional pin the tail on the donkey so I create my own (pin the bow on Blossom, crown on princess, etc…). I also go to craft stores and pick up stuff to occupy the kids time. You can have them decorate their own party hat or crown, make jewelry, or paint something like a sun catcher or photo frame. Get your cake from a superstore. They’re cheap and tasty. For food, get something that everyone can eat especially if you re allowing the parents to enjoy. Spaghetti and chicken is always a winner. Last but not least, get a jumper. All kids love them from age 1 to 21 and sometimes older.

What in the world is a jumper
Angela says
A jumper is a blow up thing a company brings and puts in your yard that the kids play on… It usually runs around $200 to $250 a day depending on the size, but the company will come and set it up and take it away for you.
Renee says
that is out of our budget. i am thinking $100 max for everything including present.

This is what I’ve been doing for a few years now and it’s always a hit.
I invite everyone he or she knows (since it’s cheap, you don’t have to whittle down the guest list) to the playground of our local park. The kids play and play until it’s time to sing “Happy Birthday” and that’s when we open up the cooler of drinks (water and juice boxes) and serve up the cupcakes (I order them at Publix or send my husband to Costco for a few boxes). Last birthday, I even added a cute cupcake tree that I borrowed from my mom and arranged all of the remaining cupcakes around the bottom of it to make it look pretty.
These cheap parties are such a hit with the kids that other friends are now doing the same.
Jennifer Myers says
A friend told me about a spa party her daughter just went to. The mom took plain black t-shirts (which are cheap at Michaels), cut them up the middle, and put some velcro at the top to make a spa jacket/cape. She wrapped the straps of flip flops with furry yarn to make spa flip flops, then the girls got to paint their fingernails & toenails. I think they did homemade facials too. My favorite website for party ideas is http://www.birthdaypartyideas.com. They have ideas for every kind of party, and most are things you can do for cheap.
Rachael says
You could take them to a local mall. If you plan ahead, you can do a “scavenger hunt” with clues for different items and stores around the mall. The girls would scout out the clues, and you would have purchased each item ahead of time from some different stores. They could be the girls’ party favors, and/or your daughter’s birthday presents. For example, one item could be a sweater from justice/old navy for your daughter’s birthday present. Another item could be a pack of silly bandz from claires or some other random store… and that would be for all the girls to take home as party favors. Then, you could go to the food court, and have some balloons ready and a cake for the birthday girl. The only money you’d really spend is on a birthday cake, balloons, and prizes. And they’d have SO much fun! Good luck!
Maryann says
Make the cake yourself, or cupcakes decorated really girly. Have a spa day, you can do it right at your house. Paint the girls nails, do there makeup, and have temporary tattoo’s. Maybe have them do a fashion show. You can play bingo with them or have a craft project for them to do, to kill some time.Good luck!
rebecca says
for the theme, I’ll often buy the tablecloth theme and then buy plain stuff at the dollar store to match in color (napkins, plates, cups, decorations, etc). For the party itself, I make the cake. If there is a beauty school around, you could take the party there for a day of pampering, you can get manicures and hairstyling on the cheap! Then take them back to your house and have a “tea time” or something like that, with just “tea” or hot cocoa and cake.

I just did a cheap birthday for my daughter. I have a friend who works at a hotel and she let us use their pool and their party/conference room. I was going to have her bday party at a BK or McDonalds. Search your area for kid events.

This year my daughter had an amazing 11th birthday party. She had a glamping (glamorous camping) themed party. We invited about 10 girls and the first activity they did was a challenge were they got into pairs and had to set up their own frame tent in one of our living rooms which they were going sleep in together overnight. We also decorated the room with fairy lights. We did swimming, a scavnger hunt, flashlight hunts, nail painting etc. and they all had so much fun. We downloaded free printable camp decorations and invitiations onlline and they looked gorgeous! In the morning, I asked them all what they wanted to eat for breakfast they were brought their own small breakfast tables with what they asked for on it. Hope this helps.
