How to Sleep Better at Night
Getting a good night’s sleep is so important! Whether you’ve found yourself tossing and turning, counting endless sheep, or you just want to learn how to sleep better at night, I’ve got you covered! These simple tips and tricks can help you drift off to restful, peaceful sleep in no time.
From food to lighting and temperature to exercise, my tips below are the things that I actually do to fall asleep fast, and enjoy restful sleep all night long!
So are you ready to start sleeping better and longer at night? Here’s what you need to do…
#1: Get Up Off Your Chair, and Go Take That Walk!
We all know how important it is to move more each day, right? Well… that’s why I love taking a long evening walk every night after dinner. An evening walk can have so many benefits! Not only can it help with digestion, it may also help you to relax as you watch the sunset, reduce stress as you spend time in nature, and even sleep better at night! Talk about a win-win-win!
#2: Then Wind Down With a Relaxing Routine…
Bedtime routines are another easy way to prepare yourself for a restful night’s sleep. When you force yourself to relax, you’re telling your body that it’s time to wind down, calm down, and get ready for some great sleep tonight!
Following are some of my favorite things I like to do every night, as well as other things I try to avoid…
Things to Consider Doing Before Bed:
- Write down your to-do list for the next day
- Watch a funny tv show
- Read a good book
- Stretch
- Take a warm, relaxing bubble bath
- Listen to music
- Sip herbal, decaf tea
- Get a massage from your sweetie
- Dim the lights
- Light candles and relax on your couch
Having a comfortable couch is so important when it comes to relaxing before bed, and these Organic Sofas, Loveseats and Sectionals make a great option! You can even customize your organic sofa with certified organic ingredients, by blending your modern style with natural, affordable comfort. Plus, every piece is handcrafted right here in the USA!
Things Not to Do Right Before Bed:
- High intensity workouts
- Have intense conversations
- Watch action movies
- Scroll through social media
- Check your email
- Work… or even think about work 🙂
#3: Hide the Chocolate and Coffee From Yourself… Seriously!
Now I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with chocolate or coffee. They’re actually two of my favorite things in the world, and yes… both part of my daily diet! 🙂 However, you may want to pay attention to what times of the day you’re indulging in your favorite treats, and how it’s affecting your sleep.
Back in college, I used to be able to drink a double mocha at 2:00 am and then fall right to sleep. Well, those were the days, right? Now I try to stop sipping on caffeinated drinks and indulging in my dark chocolate much earlier in the day. It’s amazing how much better I sleep at night, too! We don’t have to cut out our favorite things all together… just pay attention to how different foods affect your sleep, and consider enjoying some in the earlier hours of the day when necessary.
#4: Avoid That Crazy Blue Light for At Least 2 Hours Before Bed
Did you know that electronics like computers, tablets and phones send off blue light which can actually interfere with our sleep patterns? That’s why I have my laptop and phone set to automatically adjust to warmer colors every evening.
As I mentioned in my bedtime routine above, I also like to dim the lights around the house every evening. Try dimming the lights in your home for 1 – 2 hours before you go to bed, or turning off bright overhead lights and opting for lamps with warm lighting instead. Dim lights make it so much easier to wind down and fall asleep faster.
#5: Kick Your Phone Out of Your Room! {Just Do It}
Oh I know you love it and want to bring it to bed… but one of the best things you can do is sweetly say goodnight to your phone and leave it out in a different room to charge at night. It will miss you, and I know you’ll miss it, but distance makes the heart grow fonder… and it helps you sleep better, too!
#6: Got Cold Feet? Warm Them Up Before Bed!
No, I’m not talking about cold feet before marriage… I’m talking about icy cold feet before bedtime! Cold feet just may be contributing to your restlessness at night, so consider warming your feet up before bed, or sleeping in some luxurious cozy socks!
#7: Then Keep Your Room Cool & Dark
Now that you’ve got those fluffy socks on warming up your feet, make sure you have the thermostat in your room turned down. I like to keep mine set around 64 – 66 degrees. Yes, it feels chilly at first, but once you’re snuggled under all those layers of blankets in your cozy bed you’ll warm up fast and should rest easier throughout the night with the cool air. It’s also a great excuse to snuggle up with your honey!
Be sure to also keep your room dark. That may mean installing new blinds, hanging blackout curtains, or just having a silk sleep mask handy on your nightstand like I do. A dark room always makes it easier to sleep.
#8: Stop Looking At Your Clock! {No Peeking}
I’ve noticed that as soon as I look at the clock, I start thinking about how late it is. Then I think about how I can’t believe I’m still awake. Then I start thinking about how much I have to do the next day and how tired I will be if I don’t hurry up and fall asleep. The crazy cycle just keeps on going, and all of a sudden I’m wide awake and stressed out! 🙂 So for goodness sake, just stop looking at your clock. Hide it, turn it around, just no peeking, okay? You’ll thank me later!
#9: Don’t Forget to Wash Your Bedding!
Have you ever noticed how good you sleep in clean, freshly laundered sheets and blankets? I once had a doctor suggest that I wash my bedding once a week in hot water. And you know what? I can’t believe how much better I sleep in those clean, crisp sheets! Give it a try… you just might be amazed at what a difference it actually makes!
#10: Most Importantly, Choose the Right Mattress!
One of my top tips for better sleep is to treat yourself to an amazing mattress! When you sleep on a mattress that has the right firmness and support for you, you really will sleep so much better!
