Thank goodness for another easy Homemade Cleaners!
Here’s what you’ll need…

To start, when you use a 91% alcohol or higher, you’ll likely have a more effective product than what you typically find at the store!
I checked the labels on two different brands of my hand sanitizers at home… one used only 58% alcohol, and one used 70% alcohol.
So when you increase that to 91% – 99%, you’ll have a product that may be even more useful for killing off those icky germs!
With the antiviral properties of tea tree oil, the bacteria killing effectiveness of rubbing alcohol, and the strong antibacterial and antiviral properties of aloe, you’ve got a power packed trio right there!
Plus… the aloe will help soothe your skin and can be useful for preventing your skin from drying out.
Then, you’ll add in some lavender essential oil for a lovely light and fresh scent.
Many people believe that lavender may have some antibacterial properties as well, so it gets some bonus points for that!

Homemade Hand Sanitizer Ingredients
- 1/3 cup Rubbing Alcohol (91% Isopropyl Alcohol or higher)
- 2 1/2 tbsp. Aloe Vera Gel (98% or higher)
- 10 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
- 25 drops Lavender Essential Oil (or more for a stronger scent)
How to Make Hand Sanitizer at Home
Add all ingredients to a small mixing bowl.
Then whisk together thoroughly for about 1 minute, or until all ingredients have been well combined.
Immediately transfer your DIY hand sanitizer to empty containers (old cleaned out hand sanitizer containers, or travel sized liquid containers), and you’re done!
Then… just shake well before each use.

Mine has come out as a liquid, is that right? It’s not a gel like you get in the shops.
Heidi says
Hi Marie… yes, that’s the correct consistency for the homemade sanitizer – it will be more of a liquid than a gel. 🙂
Michelle says
Thank you for the post. Can you use other essential oils instead of lavender & tree oil?
Heidi says
You’re very welcome, Michelle! I always use the tea tree oil, but you can play around a little bit with the other scent ~ I’ve also made it with orange instead of lavender and that smelled amazing, too! Hope that helps! 🙂
