Add a fun and festive touch to your Fall with this easy Red Velvet Apple Frosted Cupcakes Recipe!

Red Velvet Apple Frosted Cupcakes Recipe from TheFrugalGirls.com

This summer, I saw the cutest little cupcakes at a bake sale… they were decorated as apples.  I loved them so much that I decided to make some little apple-looking cupcakes of my own.

Then when these Red Velvet Frosted Cupcakes turned out so cute, I just knew that I had to share this fun Fall Treat with you.

The secret for decorating these cupcakes is to top your Red Velvet Apple Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting that is tinted red.  Then to use a trimmed down piece of green licorice for the finishing touch.

This Red Velvet Apple Frosted Cupcakes Recipe made from Cake Mix is ideal for both birthday parties and Fall parties… or for anytime you feel the need for a delicious cupcake!

Here’s what you’ll need to get these adorable apple cupcakes baking in your oven…

Ingredients

  • 1 Red Velvet Cake Mix + oil and eggs
  • 24 Red Cupcake Liners {I found these at Michael’s}
  • 12 Green Licorice Sticks
  • 4 tablespoons Red Sprinkles
  • 16 ounces White Cream Cheese Frosting
  • 1 Red Food Coloring… or even better yet is: Red Cupcake Icing!

Instructions

  • Bake cupcakes per instructions on cake mix box. Wow ~ look at that color!
  • While your cupcakes are baking, trim your licorice pieces down to small pieces ~ I angled the end, like this… {go ahead and pop a piece of licorice into your mouth too ~ you know you want to!}
  • Frost the cupcakes, then using a knife, poke a flat slit partway down in the center…
  • Add your sprinkles, then insert the licorice piece like this…

Notes

This icing is my new friend! It takes a lot of food coloring to make red, so I vote for this already-red icing!

    Correction: the apple cupcake is in their second book, “What’s New, Cupcake?”

    Hi Laura ~ I found the green licorice mixed in with a multi-color Twizzler pack at my grocery store {Safeway}. I’ve also seen green licorice sold at Cabela’s before.

    This green licorice was actually apple flavor. 😉

    Where would I find the Green Licorice? Does it still have the same taste as the traditional Red? These look fun! Thanks for sharing! Can’t wait to make them!

    you could use red food coloring in the apple cinnamon to make it keep its dark red color

    Wilton makes icing colors that are in gel form and they don’t require so much to make your icing red. Also, if you’re allergic to chocolate or if you wanted to make apple cinnamon cupcakes, you can use the same icing colors to color the cake batter. I made a rainbow birthday cake for my best friend using those and the red was truly red!

    Hi Chrystal ~ yes, the Red Velvet does help keep it red. Although… if you did apple cinnamon inside ~ if the cupcake holder didn’t stay red enough, you could always just double them up?? Just a thought! 😉

    Adorable!!! Does the red velvet help make the bottom part so red? Because I was really hoping it would be apple cinnamon inside… (imagining how yummy that would taste!) But the red color really does sell it. Decisions decisions…
