I received the following question from frugal friend Loni on The Frugal Girls Facebook page…
“We’re starting to shop for maternity clothes! Do you have any frugal maternity clothes ideas? I’ll be trying to see if I can score some deals on clearance and also checking the Goodwill. Any other ideas??”
One of the very best ways to save money on Maternity clothes is to score these Free Belly Bands that let you keep wearing your cute jeans!
2 Free Belly Bands or 1 Free Belly Button
Have you found any ways to find sweet deals on Maternity Clothes?

Websites like ThredUp have GREAT deals on gently used clothing! I got quite a few things on there.

I found mine at Goodwill (go to the one in the nicer section of town they have the better “name brand” stuff that doesn’t look like it’s from the 90s) and also Ebay lot sales. I got several pairs of pants and about 10 shirts for around 40 dollars from a lot sale.
Maura says
I’ve gotten 4 shirts for less than $2 at Target in the last 6 months. I combine their $3 off Maternity coupon with an item on their clearance racks.

There are various online stores from where you can get the cheap maternity clothes.I have search some online stores that are babyoye, motherhood, mommyliciousmaternity etc.

As soons I found out i was pregnant, I went online to target, Kohls, motherhood maternity, etc and bought clearence items for that season (i found out in may, all winter clothes were super cheap). That way by t time they fit it would be that right season

Craigslist & garage sales were my saving grace! I ended up with a pretty fantastic pregnancy wardrobe for next to nothing — & have gotten tons of compliments on how cute my clothes are! 🙂

so far just having a belly band has saved me wonders in the maternity pants area.

To save money when I was recently pregnant, I shopped the sales for what I was going to need towards the end. I typically bought one size larger in the maternity clothes than I normally wear so they’d fit at the end. If you can, invest in some nice maxi dresses too, that was all I could wear comfortably towards the last couple weeks of being pregnant. Also, spend the money on good jeans, bc some brands (Motherhood!) shrink and don’t last.

Ask any and all you friends that have had kids if you can borrow theirs. Most people save them especially when they plan on havibg more kids. My best friend in CA also just found a ton of them for cheap on Craigslist. Thrift stores or second hand stores also ROCK for things like that. I know my friends and I always shared ours. Good luck!

I have found a lot of great maternity clothes at kids consignment stores. Another way to make your regular pants last a little longer is to loop a rubber band through the button hole and then around the button. As long as your shirt is long enough, this works well in those “transitional” months where you’re really not big enough for real maternity clothes, but your regular clothes are just not comfy anymore.

I bought deep discounted L and XL shirts for $3.00. I had low rise jeans and bought 2 discounted pairs that were 1 and 2 sizes bigger. A summer stretchy babydoll top without ties worked as a skirt. Also bought 2 babydoll crisscross dresses in L and XL that worked. You do not have to buy maternity clothes.

I live near a Huge JCPenney’s outlet in Grapevine, TX. It is a TRUE outlet and the Maternity clothes are VERY good quality for very small prices! Most jeans are usually $9.99 and the shirts are SUPER cheap! They have lounge, casual, and dress clothes. SUPER great prices!

Also try New York & Co. – the yoga pants are great!

I bought lots on Ebay……consignment shops are a great option too!!!!

Kohl’s & JCPenney’s has some cute and sometimes inexpensive clothes. I bought most my clothes through JCPenney outlet or Goodwill. Congratulations!

Walmart had some really cute maternity clothes as did Kohl’s…always reasonable and I shared with friends who shared with friends…always a good resource too!

I agree with Burlington Coat Factory. I didn’t find many pants/shorts that fit me, but they had tons of cute maternity shirts that are good brands (some motherhood maternity.) I don’t think I ever paid more than $10 for a shirt-most of them were for $5-6.
If you search your area for children’s resales, you should find maternity clothes there too. It usually costs $1-2 to get into the resale, but it is well worth it to buy baby clothes as well as maternity clothes.

I had my baby 2 months ago—SOOOO glad to be out of maternity clothes!! I’m down below my pre-preg weight now too!! Yay for real clothes.
I found a lot stylish maternity clothes at Sears. Most of the time, they were on clearance for $10 or less–and they had really cute dresses. Also, Gordman’s or “The Half Price Store” if you have one of those in your area. I liked Kohl’s clearance too, sometimes. I got a pair of maternity shorts for $9, their regular price was $36!!!!!! I never would have paid full price for that, it’s nuts. Also good for clearance is JC Penney, or a Penney’s outlet, if you can find one. They have cute jeans.
I also lived in my old navy sweats, the fold-over ones (which are great to pull up over your belly when it’s bigger), and the double-band ones they have now. You can wear them later, and if you get the matching jacket, all you need is a tank or a tee (probably a tank, I know you’re hot) and some tennies for a casual look. We have resale stores called “Once Upon a Child,” but that is hit or miss. You really have to look there. HTH!

I can’t say it loud enough: CROCS! From the moment I got up until I went to bed, I wore them. If I didn’t, I was miserable all day, like my first pregnancy. I got them cheap at the outlet in our town, but even one pair at regular price was worth it. I also found stuff at Old Navy. And hubby’s closet!

There’s a consignment sale called Just Between Friends that I love. There are different franchises all over the country. They usually have a big sale twice a year where people price all their own stuff and bring it to the sale. Check out jbfsale.com. I didn’t hear about it until after I already had a couple little ones so I haven’t bought much maternity clothes there, but I’ve found great deals on things for the kids, so I would imagine maternity clothes would be the same. Also, when you don’t need things anymore, you can sign up to sell your kids’ and maternity stuff there!
(If you decide to consign at one of the sales, put consignor #687 as your referral!)

I wore empire waist sundresses as tops all through my pregnancy. You can find them for much cheaper than maternity tops. I layered them with either short or long sleeved t-shirts underneath or wore a cardigan over them. Because they’re longer than a top, they hide whatever waistband you’ve got going on below.
lauren says
craigs list is a great place to find them at a good price.
Stephanie says
I found a bunch at Burlington Coat Factory – almost all of the jeans, pants, and capris were $9.99 and most of the tops were $3-9. I am going to check on some of these eBay bargains now!
Christina says
Consignment and resale shops are probably the cheapest to buy maternity clothes at. Depending on your size you might be able to get new clothes by just shopping bigger sizes. I had a friend that was a size 8 and as she got bigger she just went into plus size clothing. Garage sales are a good place to find maternity clothes and just borrowing from friends (providing your similar in sizes).
Amy says
Consignment sales or shops. Goodwill and check the clearance racks at Kohl’s they always have a lot and they carry their own line of Motherhood Maternity. Target also has some great stuff especially basics like tees and camis but I always thought the Liz Lange line ran a little small so go when you have time to try stuff on.

If you have one in your area, Burlington Coat Factory has nice quality, -modern- maternity clothes. We found great trendy jeans and khakis (for work) for $16-$25, which is MUCH cheaper than any other store selling new maternity clothes. The jeans especially were a huge plus, since maternity jeans are a) expensive and b) usually not very stylish unless you pay a lot of money; not so at Burlington, where they really did look like jeans anyone else would be wearing, pregnant or not. At that price, it’s not a huge investment to buy a couple pairs. Shirts aren’t quite a problem, since you might not have to buy maternity shirts at all until the end, unless you need fitted/button-down styles. Current styles work pretty well with pregnant bellies and layering tanks are usually long and stretchy, and rarely more than $7-$8. I second the belly bands. If you don’t want to spend $20+ on one, you can find instructions on the net for making your own. It’s not hard at all.
And never be without a rubber band. This trusty little friend will save you in all kinds of situations (infamous button-popping being one), and you can use the age-old loop around the jeans button and through the hoop to keep your pants up and get more time out of your regular jeans than you would otherwise. Paired with the belly band and/or long tank, people won’t even know they’re being held up with a rubber band.
Amy says
In addition to consignment shops, check for seasonal consignment sales in your area. There is usually a great deal of inventory, as these are 3-5 day events in large venues. You can not only find great maternity items, but also stock up on baby equipment, too.

shop at ross!! i’m pregnant right now also, and i got maternity pants for $12.99 and shirts for around $6-$10!

Thrift stores, consignment shops, garage sales, Craiglist and . . .
EBAY! Lots of moms sell their gently used maternity stuff off in a big lot – so you can get a whole wardrobe of good basics all in similar/same sizes.

In addition to the other great ideas here, I liked a tutorial I found for converting a pair of jeans or a skirt, into a jean skirt. Here’s the tutorial below, but when I searched it on google I saw a lot of other fun looking ideas you can make yourself. The thing about this skirt is it’s from used materials you might already have, i.e. free!

My mom actually just bought me a pair of $3 full panel maternity pants from the swapmeet they are the best! My other maternity pants I bought from Ross at $9.99 each! I have also enjoyed buying from the plus size section because they are still stylish and give me the comfort of letting my belly just sit! Also another good tip is leggings and tunics! Oh and my new life saver! CROCS! Very comfortable and cheap. I went to the Crocs outlet and bought 2 pairs for $14! They have the wideset selection of heels and flats… Very cute and cheap (GO OUTLET) Plus with the winter months on us we can always just bust out the sweat pants. My quick fix to making sweats an out side outfit I pair it with some nice clean shoes and pony tail sunglasses and jean jacket! Kinda pulls it all together! Good luck Mommies and above all STAY COMFORTABLE!

Target Clearance Racks… Always good finds in there… 🙂

Wear your hubby’s til you can’t anymore! LOL
With my first two, I had very little “maternity” stuff. I wore my hubby’s shirts and bought maternity pants and got stuff at the thrift shop that was just “big.” With my last one, I got on ebay and got like 20 shirts for the price of two new ones (including shipping!) There are some great deals on ebay but you have to LOOK for them.

I do what a lot of others are saying with garage sales, friends and thrift stores, but I also look on clearance racks. Especially places like Kholes and Old Navy where I may have a coupon to go with it. Some of the clearance prices are more than what I would pay too, so you need to dig for those that are true clearnace prices!!! And I loved the belly band, even after the baby when I was over the idea of maternity clothes!!!
Sandi says
I’m not sure what your size is, but I shopped exclusively at Lane Bryant. Much better quality at a better price. (I started out at 14 and probably ended up at 22?) Much easier to give away or even use afterwards. I also found that Lane Bryant was a great place to buy bras during this time! I had such a fabulous fitter that my purchase lasted all the way through my pregnancy! Plus you get lots of great $ off coupons, so I really made out pretty well! Towards the end, I also bought tops at Lands End in the plus department. I was able to wear my regular pants all the way through using a belly band.
Another trick is to buy tops labeled “tunic.” By definition, these tops are longer and will last you longer (and thus probably why I was able to wear my regular pants all through my pregnancy. If anyone saw what was going on underneath!!)
Shelbi says
I LOVE ebay for cheap maternity clothes! I got 2 pairs of motherhood secret panel shorts for 99 cents plus shipping! You can really get some bargains!
Nat says
I have found great deals at Old Navy – they have a great variety of maternity clothes and if you get their e-mails you will get some great deals, this past weekend they have 50% of the clearance racks, so I scored pants for 4.99 when regular price were $32.50.
Jill Williams says
A few thoughts:
1. You wouldn’t believe the amount of maternity clothes on clearance racks in stores at any given time!
2. Spread the word that you’re looking and have people call you when they see any deals!
3. Ask friends and family if they have any they would be willing to part with.
4. Ebay is another GREAT resource. Since new clothes are only worn about 4-5 months MAX of a pregnancy, they’re generally in really good shape!
5. My mom also suggests using your own pants, undo them and literally sew a spandex panel from one side to the other to allow for stretching!
Happy pregnancy!! 😉
Jill says
I got some off Ebay … you can look for “maternity lots.” Watch out though, you have to be picky since shipping can be a lot too. I would also buy “normal” clothes in just a bigger size. There are styles out there now that are more gathered at the top and bigger around the belly so they stretch without being “maternity.” That way after the baby is born you feel like you’re wearing “normal” clothes (especially if you are nursing). I found some good deals at Ross too. 🙂

I got all of my maternity clothes from the thrift store (salvation army, value world, etc), ebay, craigslist, and from local baby consignment shops. Call around to the local baby consignment shops in your area to see which ones carry maternity also. I’ve even seen people post maternity clothes on freecycle…a great way to get them free!
Leslie Pearson says
Check out Craigslist………I always see them on there.
Laura says
A lot of children’s consignment shops also have maternity clothes. Check them out now before the baby is here.

I love garage sales! (Although we are getting out of that season.) Craiglist is another place to look. The thing that help me the most was a belly band that you can get either from Target or Motherhood. It makes your regular pant size work a little longer into your pregnancy by being able to unbutton and unzip them. The belly band goes over them and holds them up. Also great for after you have the baby and ready to be out of maternity pants but your regular pants don’t quite fit yet. I will be looking forward to reading other people’s frugal ideas for maternity clothes. 🙂

Check some comsigment/ childrens resale shops. Sometimes they carry some
Jenny says
There is a children’s consignment shop in my town that I love, and they have a room for maternity. You could look for something like that where you are. Also, wear a belly band and stretch the timing you have to wear your non-maternity jeans. Even if you can’t button them, this will cover the zipper/button area for quite some time, and is partially elastic so you don’t have to worry about your pants going south!
Stefani B says
I bought mine slightly used through Savers and Goodwill. I also borrowed from friends. I wasn’t willing to pay big money for something I wouldn’t wear for very long.
