If you have the space, growing your own food is a fabulous & frugal idea!
For example, have you ever wondered what 125 Ruby Red Grapefruit, fresh off the tree look like?
Well this ol’ tree in our backyard…
… gave us 125 grapefruit this year!
For the past few years, I had avoided eating any… knowing that they might very well cause a sour explosion for my poor little taste buds!
But this was the year I took the plunge.
Sprinkled with a dash of sugar, I couldn’t believe how sweet and juicy they were! I’m happy to say that I now love my Ruby Red Grapefruit tree, and the yummy, healthy, and super thrifty batch of fruit it’s produced this year!
Even my boys have been eating grapefruit, and guzzling fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice. We were also able to give bunches away to friends and family, and store up some frozen grapefruit juice concentrate in the freezer!
If you aren’t growing food in your yard, maybe this is the year you can start planting or gardening! You’ll be amazed at how much $$ you can save, just by growing your own produce!
If you already are gardening, what are some tasty things you enjoy growing in your yard?

WOW, Heidi!! Ellie’s fav food is grapefruit, no joke, since she was one year old. I wish we could grow that in WA!!!
Found you at MommyCommunity’s Tuesday toot. Great blog!
We grow tomatoes, okra, and potatoes in our garden. Its great ‘family time’ as well as a cost-saver.

Wow, that’s a lot of grapefruit! I am planting a garden for the first time this year. I’m growing salad fixings…lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and beans, corn, strawberries and peppers.
I was just thinking about getting some grapefruit the other day. Unfortunately I’ve wasted money trying to garden only to kill things in the attempt. Enjoy your harvest!
125?! How big is that tree or is it a bush?! What did you do with the extras? Sell it or give it away?

Our tree is about 7 feet tall and 7 feet wide, so it's pretty established. The huge crop was a blessing, so we were able to give away lots of grapefruit to friends & family. I also squeezed several and froze the fresh-squeezed concentrate for juice in the coming months.
They look delicious. I wish we could have a grapefruit tree. Yummy. It is a pretty tree too.
Wow, that is amazing. I wish we could grow grapefruit here! We have several fruit trees and we do a vegetable garden every year, I love home grown produce!
We’re a fan of growing your own food, but can only do it so many months out of the year here. We have a really looooooooong winter in Utah, or at least it feels that way. I love grapefruit! I can’t believe all the grapefruit came off that little tree!
I love grapefruit too. A former bf taught me an easier, less messy way to eat one. Instead of cutting in half, peel it like you would an orange. I haven’t gone back to trying to eat it with a spoon since.
Someday I want a house with a giant grapefruit tree. Right next to it, there will be an avocado tree. I’ll live in that one and snack all day.
I luv grapefruit! A great friend of mine showed me a less messy way to eat them. Instead of cutting the grapefruit in half, peel it like an orange. To me he’s a genius! No more trying to eat it with a spoon.
We are learning to love grapefruit too, thanks to that little dash of sugar. =0) Your tree looks amazing!! We love growing veggies in our garden. Bush beans, bell peppers, strawberries, zuchinni, basil, thyme, sage and chives are favorite summer veggies/herbs. This past fall we experimented with growing sugar snap peas and broccoli. Yummy success!! I agree, growing your own is a great way to save on the ol grocery bill. =0)
I don’t know if I could eat them without that dash of sugar ~ they are definitely an acquired taste!
Citrus is a whole new game for us… we used to live in the Northwest, where we grew strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, and apples. I sure do miss my berries!!
We are going to be embarking on our own gardening journey this year! I am praying that we will produce alot of “fruit” from our labors! Thanks for sharing! I love grapefruit!
Wow. I’m guessing it wouldn’t grow well in Ohio?
Oh, I love grapefruit and so do my kids! Even the more tart white grapefruits.
What a bountiful harvest that was… a true blessing. I’m hoping some of my gardening efforts pay off this year.
Oh I love grapefruit! Yummy!
This year we are planting a garden that has everything you can think of in it. Last year all we did was okra, tomatoes, and peppers, but it still helped a lot as far as saving $ goes.
I’ve never seen a grapefruit tree! How exciting to have it in your yard. Isn’t growing your own food the best! I love it too during the winter time when all you have to do is run down to the basement instead of out to the store for a veggie to go with dinner.
Oh, yum! It has been a long time since I’ve had grapefruit. We would drizzle them with a bit of honey.
Yum… I never thought to drizzle honey on my grapefruit ~ I’ll definitely have to try that. Thanks for the tip!!
Wow! That is awesome! We have cherry and peach trees in our yard. We canned over 40 quarts of peaches last year. Plus I supplied all the family with peaches too! It is wonderful to have your own garden!
Wow! That is some harvest! I’m not a grapefruit fan, but I’ve been told that if you pick them straight from your tree they are so much better. (Maybe like picking tomatoes from the garden is so much better than store bought?)
Anyway… that grapefruit tree is definitely a Finer Things! Thanks for linking up.
We do our own garden and love reaping the rewards! And it is so good for you!
That is alot of grapefruit!! I just love it! It would be impossible to grow it here in Indiana but, we do have a garden every year. We grow lots of veggies.
I have a salsa and herb garden. I grow tomatoes, onions, various peppers and herbs.

does any one has a recipe for homemade laundry detergent?
Your grapefruits will taste even better when you put just a pinch of salt on them with the sugar. The salt turns up the receptors on the tongue. Try it with oranges, apples, peaches, etc
